Sometimes the music group choose to do some singing, they sing all sorts of different songs from different kinds of music. Sometimes they have outside visitors coming to take classes to teach people how to play different instruments properly eg drumming workshop. Dance is also incorporated into the music group this consists of people doing different movements set to music. Tuesday Extend Extend is a charity that supports older adults and disabled people to develop their physical, mental and social capacities so that they may realise their full potential and improve their quality of life. Extends hundreds of teachers all hold recognised qualifications in fitness, receive continuing professional development and are fully insured. Here at New Horizons we have been taking Extend classes for the last 8 or so years on Tuesday mornings. No one has to come to all the classes and people chose whether they do the exercises or not. The great thing is to enjoy social contact, have entertaining music and singing and generally have fun while exercising with in the persons capacity. The exercises are tailored to the needs and abilities of the individual and we like to think that by the end of each session all the body has been loosened up, mobilised and strengthened, and above all we like to have fun! So, if you attend the New Horizons come and join us !! Stretch The Tuesday afternoon " In touch" group is all about relaxation and meditation. We have soft music, restful atmosphere and encouragement to chill out and allow time to forget all our cares and concerns even if it is for a short while. Wednesday Communication Group This is a group that we hold every Wednesday morning from 11 till 12. There is normally a load of clients that come of their own choice and one member of staff. In this group we talk about a number of topics such as trips that clients have taken which they have enjoyed and about the places they went sightseeing. The member of staff present also has opportunity to let us know if there are any events that are coming up in the day centre or activities that are going on outside the day centre that would be of interest to disabled people. For example, poetry competitions, theatre, sports places, music festivals and many other things. Recently we had Legal and General Cardiff in to see what difficulties the clients have with call centres and different ways that these difficulties can be alleviated. Within the group we all gave a list of the things that happened and how it can be improved which Legal and General found very interesting. Legal and General went on with New Horizons help to make a short video to show the difficulties so that they can use their findings when training new staff of the future. Even though we do all these things within the communication room we do make time for people to have a general chit chat as a group so that any one who is not interested in the taking part of a particular activity can also feel included and gets to speak among friends. Chiropractor Wednesday afternoon New Horizons are proud to have Iain McCarthy BSc, a Chiropractor who leads a group exercise class every Wednesday afternoon. The class lasts for one and a half hours and is attended by both men and woman. The first hour of the class is a seated, group activity. The overall purpose of the class is to improve flexibility and strength with gentle aerobic exercise. However, there is also a rehabilitation element to the class which sets out to restore movement through exercises that increase whole-body ranges of motion and balance. Many class members have challenges of restricted movement or disability and get in the habit of over-relying on the more able parts of their body. During the class, each person is encouraged to attain maximum whole-body movement emphasising the use of less able or restricted parts of their body to help improve or restore optimal whole-body movement. In the last half an hour of the class Iain has a more ‘hands on’, one-to-one session with each class member. He listens to any concerns and goes through specific exercises that each person should try to practice outside the class. Thursday New Horizon Quiz Thursday afternoon is the New Horizon Quiz, hosted by our resident quiz master Jeff. The names of all those clients wishing to take part are written onto the score sheet and using the quiz software on the laptop each client is asked their individual question in turn. Every correct answer results in a point to yourself, however should you get the question wrong or not know the answer, it is open to the other contestants by the raise of a hand. The quiz starts after lunch approximately 13:15 and finishes at about 15:00 only being interrupted while teas and coffees are served. The questions vary vastly from the very easy to the very difficult, covering a wide variety of subject including music, history, geography, sport and general knowledge. It is a great way to spend an afternoon exercising your grey matter whilst laughing sometimes uncontrollably at the jokes and friendly banter. Friday Besides the above the following activities are available to the clients everyday. Gym New Horizons Fitness zone/gym was established in September 2011 initially for the benefits of the clients and then was extended to include staff.
