I have this conversation a lot in clinic

A scan will not always correlate to the cause of your pain.

Sometimes scanning can actually cause more harm than good & completely normal findings can become very worrying to people without the appropriate education.

There is a saying -
Treat the man, not the scan 👏

Use It or Lose It?

These are MRI scans of the thighs of 3 different people.

The 74 yr man has less muscle (the darker bit) and more fat (the whiter bit) than the 2 others who are active.

The 40 yr triathlete & 70 yr triathlete both have much more muscle mass & less fat due to being active.

You don't have to be a triathlete or a high functioning sports person but keeping strong will help protect muscles, against a loss of muscle mass.

Having less muscle mass may mean decreased health, faster ageing & increased frailty as we progress through life.

Sure, some things change with age, but far less than most people assume.
-You lose power if you stop training for it.

-You lose balance if you don’t challenge it.

-You lose strength if you don’t use it.

-You lose confidence if you don’t move.

Aging isn’t the thief; neglect is.

This isn’t about denial or trying to be 25 again. It’s about realizing that most decline isn’t inevitable, it’s optional.

Don’t hand over what time hasn’t taken yet.
