HM Coastguard Southend Safety Notice: Tides
Not only here in Southend but anywhere around the coast it can be so easy to get caught out by the tides and the sea can be unsparing no matter how experienced you are.
HM Coastguard Southend are regularly called to deal with a number of incidents in which people have been cut off by the incoming tide across our local coastline, most common are those that make their way out to the Mulberry Harbour, or Phoenix Unit as it is also commonly known by, without attaining this prior knowledge which can prove invaluable.
Please! We ask that you take a short amount of time to go online and check the tide times before setting out and also read local hazard signage.
Southend-on-Sea is a tidal flood plain. The tide retreats some 1+ mile offshore and comes back in twice each day (approx every 12.5hrs from low tide to low tide), knowing tide times will ensure you are not caught out on the water.
Tide information is available at a number of places along the shoreline, local Pier & Foreshore offices and, in this day and age of smart mobile phones, there is little excuse for someone in your visiting party to not know local tide times when visiting the coast as can easily be searched online.
To help we have provided 2 links (Met Office & Port of London Authority which covers Southend) for you to help gather that information, to help you remain safe while visiting our City and it’s beaches.
