Are your children wearing the right size, type & style of shoe?

Children's feet undergo significant changes as they grow, reflecting the rapid development and physical transformations occurring throughout childhood. From birth to adolescence, a child's feet grow quickly, with the most rapid growth occurring in the first few years of life.

During infancy and toddlerhood, the bones in the feet are still forming and are primarily composed of soft, flexible cartilage. As children begin to walk and explore their environment, their feet gradually strengthen and adapt to support their body weight and movement.

By the time they reach school age, their feet continue to grow and develop, requiring regular assessments to ensure they wear appropriately sized and supportive footwear. This period of growth is crucial, as improper footwear can lead to developmental issues and discomfort.

During the teenage years, the feet undergo further changes, often growing in size rapidly and stabilising as they approach adulthood. Regular monitoring and proper foot care are essential throughout these stages to ensure healthy foot development and to prevent long-term problems.

Proper footwear is essential for children’s foot health at every stage of their development. Regular checks and consultations with professionals can prevent minor issues from becoming serious problems. If you have concerns about your children's feet or footwear, don't hesitate to seek advice. Taking these steps will help ensure your children’s feet stay healthy and well-supported as they grow.

If you are concerned about your child's foot health, get in touch.

What to expect during your Footscan appointment

Your appointment begins with a comprehensive consultation where your podiatrist will:
- Discuss your symptoms in detail to understand your specific concerns
- Learn about your lifestyle, activity levels, and personal goals
- Analyse your current footwear to identify potential contributing factors
- Conduct a thorough assessment of your feet and lower limbs

The heart of your appointment involves our digital foot scanning technology:
- You'll walk over our specialised pressure plate several times
- The system captures detailed data about your foot mechanics and movement patterns
- We analyse your unique foot scan data while you're both standing and walking.

Your results appear instantly on-screen for immediate review. One of our skilled podiatrists will guide you through the findings, explaining what the data means and helping you understand the implications for your foot health. This detailed analysis forms the foundation of your personalised treatment plan.

Based on your scan results and consultation, you may be advised that you need custom orthotics or insoles. If required, we can design bespoke orthotics using dynamic, state-of-the-art 3D printing technology, creating the world's first high-tech 3D printed insoles specifically tailored to your feet.

Whether your treatment involves rehabilitation exercises, strength work, or custom orthotics, you'll leave with a comprehensive plan designed to address the root cause of your pain, not just the symptoms.

If you have painful feet, take a read of our latest blog to find out how a Footscan appointment can help you.

What to wear and bring to your Footscan appointment

To ensure we get the most accurate assessment possible, please come prepared with:
- Comfortable pair of shorts (or bring them along if the weather is cold)
- Clothing that allows easy access to your feet and lower legs
- A range of your everyday and/or sporting footwear
- Any existing insoles or orthoses you currently use
- Reports from previous x-rays, scans, or imaging (if available, though not essential)

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition caused by an overactive immune system that triggers widespread inflammation throughout the body. This lifelong condition is characterised by periods of flare-ups and remission, with symptoms that may resolve and recur unpredictably throughout a person's life.

Psoriasis affecting the hands and feet, medically known as palmoplantar psoriasis, impacts between 12-16% of people living with psoriasis. This specific form typically manifests on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet, creating unique challenges for those affected.

Psoriasis on the feet is classified as a high-impact site, meaning it can severely affect quality of life regardless of how much of the body's total surface area is involved. This form of psoriasis is considered one of the most disabling types because it directly limits the use of your feet, making essential daily activities like walking extremely painful and challenging.

Research demonstrates the profound impact of foot psoriasis on mobility and daily functioning. Studies show that people living with psoriasis on their feet are nearly twice as likely to experience mobility problems and approximately 2.5 times more likely to report difficulties performing routine daily activities compared to those without foot involvement.

Living with foot psoriasis doesn't mean you have to endure the pain and limitations alone. At Essex Footcare we can assess your feet and recommend effective strategies to reduce pain and discomfort during psoriasis flare-ups. Through specialised treatment approaches, footwear recommendations, and pain management techniques, professional care can help restore your mobility and improve your quality of life.

Don't let foot psoriasis limit your daily activities. Contact our podiatry team today to schedule an assessment and discover how we can help you manage your symptoms more effectively.

What to look for in children's school shoes

Choosing the right school shoes for your child is crucial for their foot health, comfort, and overall development. With children spending hours each day walking, running, and playing, proper footwear can prevent discomfort, injury, and long-term foot problems. Here's your essential guide to selecting the best school shoes for your child.

Fit and fastening
- Shoes should have a secure fastening, such as laces, Velcro, or buckles, to keep the foot in place and prevent slipping.
- Ensure the shoes fit snugly at the heel without pinching or leaving gaps.

Flexible and supportive soles
- Look for shoes with flexible soles that allow the foot to move naturally but are firm enough to provide stability.
- Avoid overly stiff soles, as these can restrict natural foot movement.
- Breathable materials
- Choose shoes made of breathable materials like leather or mesh, which help prevent sweating and irritation.
- Avoid synthetic materials that trap heat and moisture, increasing the risk of fungal infections.

Don't wait for minor issues to become major problems. Book an appointment with our experienced podiatry team today if you have any concerns about your child's foot health or need professional guidance on selecting the proper footwear. Early intervention can prevent long-term complications and ensure your child stays active and comfortable throughout their school years.

We can nail it!

Ingrown toenails can cause excruciating pain that affects every step you take and even disturbs your sleep with pressure from bedding!

When faced with this painful condition, most people don't immediately think of visiting a podiatrist. Instead, they typically book an appointment with their GP, often enduring lengthy wait times only to receive a prescription for antibiotics. While antibiotics may help reduce symptoms if an infection has developed around the impacted nail, they cannot address the root cause, which is the physical presence of the ingrown nail spike itself.

The solution is to see a podiatrist! We can relieve your pain and teach you ways to prevent future nail problems.

A patient seen today by Anita, kindly wrote this lovely review:

"Anita has helped me several times with recurring ingrown toenails (admittedly caused by my own habits). She's consistently welcoming and understanding, always putting me at ease about the situation. While removing an ingrown toenail will never be pleasant, visiting the clinic and seeing Anita always is! I would highly recommend her services."

If you have painful, red and swollen toes, book your appointment with Essex Footcare - clinics in Basildon, Billericay and Romford.

Dehydration shows up first in your extremities, including your feet, leading to dry, cracked skin that's especially painful around the heels. When you're properly hydrated, your skin stays supple and healthy.

Interestingly, when you're dehydrated, your body actually holds onto water, causing swelling in your feet and ankles - drinking enough water helps reduce this puffiness!

Your foot muscles also need proper hydration to function optimally, as dehydrated muscles cramp more easily and recover slower from activity.

💡 Summer hydration tip: Aim for 8+ glasses of water daily, and remember to drink even more in hot weather!

☀️ Don't forget your feet this summer!

While applying sunscreen to your face, arms, and shoulders, remember that your feet also need protection. The tops of your feet are particularly vulnerable to sunburn, especially when wearing sandals, flip-flops, or going barefoot at the beach.

Sunburned feet aren't just painful, they can lead to blistering, peeling, and increased risk of skin damage. Plus, swollen, burned feet can make walking uncomfortable for days! 🦶

Top tips for foot sun protection:

- Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen to the tops of your feet, ankles, and between your toes.
- Reapply every 2 hours, especially after swimming.
- Don't forget often-missed spots like your heels and ankle bones.
- Consider protective footwear during peak sun hours.

Your feet work hard for you all year round - show them some love and keep them protected this summer! ☀️👟

Why do my feet hurt? It's one of the most common questions we hear at Essex Footcare!

Foot pain isn't just "something you have to live with", understanding WHY it happens is the first step to finding relief. Let's break down the most common causes and types of foot pain we see every day.

Common causes of foot pain:

Poor biomechanics 🚶‍♀️ The way you walk, run, or stand can create uneven pressure distribution, leading to pain over time. Your gait pattern affects everything from your toes to your back!

Structural issues 🏗️ Flat feet, high arches, bunions, or hammer toes can alter how your foot functions, creating compensatory problems elsewhere.

Overuse & activity 🏃‍♂️ Too much, too soon, or repetitive stress from sports, work, or daily activities can overwhelm your foot's ability to cope.

Poor footwear 👠 Shoes that don't fit properly, lack support or aren't suitable for your activities are major culprits in foot pain.

Age & wear ⏰ Natural changes in foot structure, loss of fat padding, and decreased flexibility all contribute to discomfort.

Types of foot pain we treat:

Plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, Achilles tendonitis arch pain, Fallen arches, strains & sprains, Metatarsalgia, Morton's neuroma, bunions, hammer toes, Ankle instability, arthritis, chronic pain, tired, sore feet from poor support, and more.

At Essex Footcare, we use advanced Gait and Motion Scanning technology to analyse exactly how your feet move and where problems occur. This precise analysis allows us to prescribe customised foot orthotics that address your specific biomechanical needs.
