Should we put a price on protection?
We don't question the value of protecting the everyday items closest to us, like phones, cars, or our homes, so why isn't there a similar budget for protecting the devices that help keep us safe, healthy, and ultimately save lives?
Shrinking budgets in healthcare facilities have allowed endoscopy units to think that they cannot justify the cost of a tip protector, but is this a false economy?
Have they considered the cost of not protecting their endoscopes?
Although scopes can be repaired, many factors impact the costs, including the extent of damage and whether the endoscope requires repair or refurbishment. A recent study showed that, overall, the average cost of endoscope repairs was $5,833, with 20 minutes of staff time needed to complete paperwork related to sending an endoscope out for repair.
These expenses amounted to $63.93 to $128.05 per endoscope.
There is also the cost of damage that isn't visible to consider, the scratches and minute tears that act as reservoirs for biofilm formation and threaten patient safety.
Scope downtime can also incur hidden costs; one study considered the average time that reporting faulty endoscopes and sending for repairs generates 54 tasks and consumes 8 hours and 53 minutes of staff time, equating to £325 in efficiency costs.
Today, we are determined to reduce unnecessary spending, so it seems surprising that we spend so much on repairs and very little on preventing the cause of the damage instead.
Using a distal tip protector not only protects the endoscope, but it also reduces downtime, repair costs, the use of loan scopes, staff efficiency, and improves patient safety.
The ProTech endoscope tip protector costs a fraction of the (average) cost of an endoscope repair and protects the endoscope from accidental damage during transport and storage.
Maximum protection for a minimal cost.
So the question we should all be considering is not how much it costs to protect an endoscope, but rather,
What's the cost of not protecting the endoscope?
