Got Lithiums batteries ? do they cut out at times ?

With a Lithium battery there are two components, you have the BMS , the battery management system circuit board and the actual cells. Depending on the AH rating you can have from *12 to upto *48 cells, *this depends on the type of battery cells used and their configuration.

They are looked after or shall we say managed by the BMS , so it controls the charging and the discharging of the cells but also monitors the temperature of the unit as a whole..

*Now the cells themselves have a cutout circuit actually fitted on the top part of the cell and that breaks the circuit should the voltage of that cell go too low .. YouTube videos showing you how to remove this and once again charge the battery but be warned.. it's not safe..

* Not all cell types have this protected cutoff.

BMS do fail often. ,,, out of 10 lithium battery failures , 8 of them can be BMS related…

Key thing to remember ... keep them charged , Most manufacture original supplied chargers are safe ..

any questions please let me know ..

Battery performance in this cold weather will be a issue , the older they are, the more they will be affected.

Keeping them warm overnight is virtually impossible for most people if kept outdoors. Insulation material around the batteries will help but please be careful if the material is conductive making sure you dont short the battery terminals.

Just repaired a very early S drive 120amp , its come off a days strider dated August 2001.. so much corrosion, green pins etc. front wheel bearings have gone. I had to use a thin chisel to separate the controller from the holder.

Almost every day, I hear about people on mobility scooters being struck by e-scooters, e-bikes, or cars, and it seems to be happening more often now that it gets dark earlier.

Crossing the road on a mobility scooter now is real hazzard , Road users don't slow down much when going round corners so make yourself as visible as possible ..

Use reflected tape down the side of your scooter , it all helps plus I been told that in the case of a accident , they can argue "I didn't see them" and that can really go against a claim .. so don't give them the satisfaction. some links etc ..

Lots of Success with blind repairs, that's where I have no way of testing them.

For example a Curtis 1206AC , a powerful AC motor driver controller. Repaired for a faction of replacement cost.

So how do I do it ? Well I written a A.I program and by inputting various components it tells me the current drawn etc using a database I built up over the years

It looks up all fault with components it builds up a possible connection by inputting other components , the map created allows me to see problem, errors and intermittent faults.

Now I want to turn this into a phone app so mobility scooter repairer's can input the reported fault and it give a listing of possible fixes using a flowchart system , taking a picture of the controller will be enough to tailor the errors etc how deep it goes with actual components is the issue at the moment . Fault codes help but they can be so misleading so Im hoping by putting my experience into a App it save you time and money... why repairing something quickly will bring the cost down, there's nothing worse and having a scooter in the workshop and using a process of elimination where you have to wait for parts ..

Got a S Drive given you 8 flashes ? motor brushes are good , bad news controller fault ? not always... the brake function is related to the motor output so a bad brake resistance etc can cause a 8 flasher when it should be 5 flashes, very annoying I admit .

if you have the 8 flash code, a 6 flash code on some controllers , check the disconnected brake resistance( 25 upto 80 ohms) ,, check the actual connection on the controller , is the pin looking a dark colour compared to the other pins ? you got a corroded pin if it is and a possible cause of the fault(s) you're experiencing ..

Now here's a beauty, got a controller no fault codes but wont drive ... everything checks out , brake resistance, motor resistance, battery voltage stable .. see if you can turn the throttle lever a few degrees to the left , keep it there in that position now turn the scooter off , back on, no error codes , see if it works

do the same to the right ... Im seeing a number of controllers as they age produce this problem...

Got a 7 flash code ? changed the controllers ? changed the throttle pot ?

ah so strange because the original throttle pot works on other scooters no problem .

why ? it boils down to the controller tolerance for example say the original pot measures 5.35K , 5K pot , should be okay ? not necessary because some controllers insist on a throttle pot no more than 5.25K any more its a flash 7 code ...

For some controllers this tolerance can be setup in the factory etc but not every brand of controller allows this ...

Those wonderful Solax activator black boxes , over half the components used are chinese specials..

24/09/2025

Great news, I can now acquire over 90% of all chinese components , it started by repairing a couple of eBikes for a Chinese couple thus making friends before they returned back home and kept their promise of sourcing a great many components that have caused me problems over the years ..I just received my first batch.. best news in years.
