Sharing a post from a small business that makes lovely art. I bought a print from here last year and I love it.
I've just had my accounts through and it's not great news.
I knew sales had been down due to various reasons, Facebook just doesn't perform these days so I have to rely on events and many of them haven't performed either due to lack of customers 😢 so what is the answer for a business like mine?
I have already begun to try and get my makes into more shops & galleries but they too have felt the financial strain and at least a couple have closed their doors during the past year. I will aim to be brave this year and approach more galleries but sadly some even charge you just to show your work to them and it doesn't even guarantee you a place on their walls and I just cannot keep loosing money.
A few months back a lady at event said to me 'oh I don't pay that much for prints!' The print in question was £20! I haven't photocopied it, I pay a professional company to print them for me so by the time I factor in a) the time it takes to order/collect b) the cost of the print c) the preparation of the print, hand finishing, mounting, signing etc d) the fees I have to pay if I sell via a shop or an event e) tax f) postage costs/packaging. Hmmm....not actually an awful lot left for me and yet I'm the one doing the majority of the work. I wish people would understand that the price you pay for an item, the artist only gets a very, very tiny slice of that pie 😬 I know you guys get it, but so many people don't 🥹 What is the answer?! Any advice at all would be gratefully received.
If you like my art to help support me you don't even need to make a purchase, just liking or commenting on my posts will help them get seen and in turn bring in more customers. Thank you for reading all of this, you are all stars and I appreciate every single one of you 🫶
