The sphenoid is an exceptionally beautiful bone, beautiful in its complexity, beautiful in its delicacy. It has often been compared to a butterfly, or moth – with its body centrally, its two greater wings, its two lesser wings, and its pterygoid processes hanging down like the legs of a moth.

The sphenoid is also a central, pivotal component of the cranio-sacral system, located centrally within the base of the cranium, articulating with every other bone of the cranium and also with several facial bones. Together with the occiput, it forms the spheno-basilar synchondrosis, the pivotal fulcrum around which the whole bony cranio-sacral system revolves.
