Inspiring Future Healthcare Leaders

On June 11th, Kat Holt (Director of Sustainability and Social Value) and Claire Sides (UK Head of People Learning and Development) spent the morning with Level 3 Health & Social Care T Level students at .

The students had the chance to learn about STERIS, the healthcare sector, and the journey of a surgical instrument — from supply chain to sterilisation — while exploring the ethical and social impact of the people involved at every stage.

It was a fantastic opportunity to inspire the next generation of STEM and healthcare professionals, highlighting the real-world connections between science, social value, and meaningful careers.

We've equipped 80 senior managers across STERIS Healthcare UK, with the knowledge to better understand, support and embrace neurodiversity in the workplace including - what neurodivergence is, how workplace assessments can help, and, what it truly feels like to be neurodivergent at work. We have also planned for all Associates across STERIS Healthcare UK to have completed the training by the end of the year.

Tomorrow is International Women’s Day. The focus of this day is to achieve gender equality, advance women’s and girls’ rights, and foster empowerment in both personal and professional spheres.

We celebrate women on International Women’s Day and every day at STERIS. One way we do this is through our Employee Resource Group, The Global Women’s Network. The purpose of this group is to promote and encourage an inclusive community that allows all Associates at STERIS to lead confidently, overcome obstacles and make a significant impact in their fields.

Every woman has the power to change the world, and together we can create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

It’s National Apprenticeship Week, and at STERIS, we are celebrating the impact of apprenticeships in developing talent across our business. With apprentices at all levels from NVQ Level 2 to Level 7, our programmes empower Associates of all ages to upskill, grow, and advance their careers.

Thank you to all our Associates who took part in our Health Awareness Months throughout October and November, who supported, encouraged, organised or simply started a conversation!

The aim of our Health Awareness Months at STERIS are to break down barriers, educate, signpost and allow our Associates to have fun, start conversations they wouldn’t normally have and potentially save lives.

Today is International Men’s Day, which aligns with our annual Health Awareness Month at STERIS UK.

On Saturday, 16th November, over 200 Associates and their families came together for a charity football tournament at Birmingham Powerleague, raising awareness about men’s mental health and the connection between physical and mental well-being.

We were delighted to welcome the amazing Talk Club, a mental health charity dedicated to helping men open up about their feelings. The tournament featured 14 teams competing through knockout stages, culminating in a thrilling final between our Homerton team and the UK Service and HR team. Doros Polydorou, Managing Director of STERIS Healthcare UK, officiated the final match, which ended in a 1-0 victory for the UK Service and HR team.

The winning team chose to donate their charity prize money to Talk Club, a grass roots mental health charity based in Bristol, working to change attitudes towards men's mental health.

It was a fantastic day for Associates and their families, celebrating the importance of reducing health inequalities and promoting better well-being for all.

As STERIS EMEA Health Months continue, in the UK, we begin focusing on men’s health issues, su***de prevention; stress management; addiction; and lifestyle diseases. These are issues that affect both sexes but data shows that men are predominantly susceptible. We are opening up conversations and breaking down stigmas to ensure our Associates feel supported.

Every year, the STERIS UK training team prioritises teaching our UK Apprentices CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) in recognition of Restart a Heart Day (October 16th).

Led by Nate Parker-Hughes from STERIS HR Shared Services - who is also a St John Ambulance Emergency First Aid Responder and Trainer - we hosted a 30-minute webinar emphasising the importance of CPR and using AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator) to save lives.

Two years ago, STERIS Instrument Processing’s Health and Safety team spearheaded an initiative to install AEDs in every STERIS Instrument Processing facility. These life-saving devices are also registered on The Circuit, the National Defibrillator Network, which connects NHS ambulance services to defibrillators across the UK. This ensures that, in the critical moments following a cardiac arrest, AEDs can be located and accessed quickly to increase the chances of survival.

When someone experiences cardiac arrest, every second counts. For every minute that passes without CPR and defibrillation, their chance of survival drops. Yet, many defibrillators go unused because emergency responders aren’t aware of their locations. The Circuit solves this problem by providing up-to-date information to help save lives.

Although CPR training is no longer a mandatory part of the healthcare learning standard for Apprentices, STERIS UK continues to offer this life-saving education, believing that one day it could make the difference between life and death.
