Physiotherapy, Chiropractors, Osteopaths. All well known titles and what they help with is also well known and understood.

In many ways, I wish I had gone down one of these 'traditional' routes and qualified in a therapy that doesn't need constant explaining and questioning about 'what the benefits are' and 'what qualifications do you have'?

I have 3 years full time training (degree equivalent) in anatomy and physiology and human movement and correction.

I have 2 years training in naturopathic nutrition (including anatomy and physiology and the workings of the human body).

I have qualiifications in therapeutic massage (more anatomy and physiology) oncology massage. I have studied Iridology and Life-coaching.

I have recently completed and passed a level 3 (O level equivalent) course in dementia care and in 2 months time I am attending a Scar Therapy course. I love learning and passing this learning on to help others.

And yet with all this knowledge and training and over 30 years experience in helping people of all ages: from 7 years old to 90 years old, runners, cyclists, singers, actors and musicians, judges, CEO's etc, teaching students in private schools and at Southampton University, the awareness 'out there' of who I can help is continually decreasing.

The numbers of 'AT teachers' is dwindling, but the benefits are too great to lose.

Next time you are in pain, feel you or your child is slumping or that your performance at work or engaging in hobbies is waning, please consider THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE alongside the better known therapies.

As a younger person, the Alexander Technique can help with increasing your confidence and social skills.
As you age, the Alexander Technique can help you to maintain mobility and independence.
As a singer, dancer, actor, showjumper or other 'performer', the Alexander Technique can help elevate your skills to a higher level.

As our gardens begin to bloom and flourish, we will be spending more time tending to them. To avoid potential aches and pains that can accompany this work, here are a few tips:

Take regular breaks so that you are not allowing your muscles and joints to become fixed in any one position.

When weeding or digging, bend from your hips, not your waist. If you collapse over your plants you will overstretch your back muscles and they will be unable to support your arms efficiently, which will lead to tension in your shoulders and neck.

When reaching up to cut tall hedges or trees, avoid leaning backwards and be careful not to lock your knees. This could lead to tension in your lower back and your tools feeling much heavier, due to lack of back support.

At the end of the day, admire your work with an ache free back!

Thought for the month:

I wonder how many of us have made a bee-line for the gym or joined a slimming club to remove those few extra pounds put on over Christmas, with the, generally over-optimistic, expectation of losing them far more quickly than it took to put on?

With all the new health classes and information now readily available on becoming a 'new you' isn't it strange that we continue to repeat this scenario every year?

I believe that the only way we can achieve truly long lasting results is to change our 'habits'. Habits of thought, of what we eat, how we move and do what we do.

The Alexander Technique teaches you how to change unnecessary and harmful habits for considered and efficient ones. It isn't a quick fix nor a complete 'cure'; but it is a long lasting skill that, once learnt, can be used to be the best you can be, whatever your age and whatever you do.

I have benefited from this skill since 1992, when I wanted relief from a frozen shoulder, to manage my asthma and to play my flute with more ease. It has also helped me avoid 'essential' surgery' on both my knees and, in a more unexpected way, to deal with the death of both my parents.

If any of the above resonates with you, give me a call. You may be surprised at the benefits of learning the Alexander Technique.

And the yearly scenario of New Year, New you can be a thing of the past.
