Wessex Chiropractic

Wessex Chiropractic Wessex chiropractic offers hands-on complementary healthcare for people and animals.

Chiropractors use gentle manual therapies to manipulate specific joints and muscles. Most people think of their chiropractor as someone who can help with back pain. This is frequently true, however chiropractors are trained in the manipulation of all joints - not just the spine. Based in Basingstoke, Hampshire, we tailor our treatments to the patient - for example lots of people are nervous about coming to the chiropractor. For those who dislike the 'clicking' sound of adjustments there are comfortable alternatives. We always work within the patient's tolerance and according to the patient's likes and dislikes.

It is this week. Migraine is much more than just a headache. It can take many forms from abdominal migraines in children; vestibular migraines which cause balance issues and vertigo; to hemiplegic migraines which cause stroke-like weakness and paralysis on one side of the body.

The Migraine Trust offers lots of help and advice for those suffering with migraine.

As a sufferer I find the NHS recommended supplements of riboflavin, magnesium and CoQ10 very helpful. I also acupuncture myself! I buy my riboflavin from Migrasoothe. The last time I ran out was a bank holiday Saturday. I ordered that morning, resigned to not receiving anything until the middle of the following week. Later that same day the parcel arrived - incredible service!!

82 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) submitted!!! 1 hour already completed for the new CPD year 🥳

Every year, as part of being a registered Chiropractor, I need to complete 30 hours of CPD and reflect on what I have learned. The title Chiropractor is protected under law - it is an offence to call yourself a Chiropractor if you are not registered with the GCC.

The year runs from September to August. I've just submitted 82 hours - this doesn't include any of my personal research but does include the work I'm doing as part of the pathway to membership of The Royal College of Chiropractors Pain faculty. I'm already a full member of the college after completing postgrad training following graduation, and a licentiate Animal faculty member due to my additional animal training :-)

Work isn't just what you see me doing in the treatment room!!

People often ask me how I can treat an animal as they can’t tell you what’s good/bad. Here’s a little clip of me treating my son’s pony - that is one happy upper lip movement! Just before the end of the clip you can hear two big clicks as his neck releases 🥰

The clinic will be closed 19/7-29/7 so please give me a shout if you’d like me to fit you in this coming week!

Keele University has developed a comprehensive FREE guide for those with Osteoarthritis (OA). It includes chapters on understanding OA, managing and treating it - including things you can do for yourself.

When I’m not working I can be found outdoors with the family, dog and ponies. Tonight my daughter and I saw our first lamb born on the farm where the ponies live 😍!

Appointments in April are looking a bit few and far between I'm afraid - combination of reasons, including Easter! If you are likely to need something please do get in touch ASAP or you may be looking at a longer than usual wait!

Around 1 in 3 men, and nearly 1 in 2 women, aren't doing enough physical activity. The infographic below shows some of the benefits - and I am staggered that exercise can reduce your chance of breast and colon cancer by 20%!

Exercise can be really daunting though - and some of the numbers in that picture below are intimidating! I always say to patients that it takes way longer for our muscles to build strength than our poor brains can cope with - we tend to give up our best intentions as we feel we aren't making any progress. But remember it takes a single step to start a marathon - this isn't a sprint race.

I wonder if reframing the concept of 'exercise' could help. Rather than thinking of it as 'for fitness' try considering it as a tool to help YOU do the activities YOU want to do. Those could be gardening, sitting comfortably at your desk or simply making it through the day!

The NHS has produced quite a few free resources that may help:

The first visit can be a bit daunting - there's often a lot of information to take in. Don't panic though - we know that people can only really process a small percentage of any medical encounter. That's why you're given a tailored set of video exercises specific to your condition and given lots of opportunity to ask questions. Key things to remember will be repeated and can even be sent in a text :-)

Happy New Year! Outsourcing of work tasks is something most of us are doing these days, whether it is with our animals, the pre-prepared food deliveries or household tasks. It occurs to me that one thing we can't outsource is our physical fitness.

Unfortunately I can't share my favourite exercises with you all here - as part of my statutory professional status it is advised that any exercises must be tailored to the individual patient - this is for safety reasons.

I subscribe each month to exercise software so that I can give each patient a tailored exercise programme. You may not do them every day, but you know they are there. We can start with just a couple of simple things that you can fit into everyday life. You can feed back to me on how helpful they are, and we can change them as you progress.

Unfortunately I can't make these programmes unlimited in duration as, again for safety reasons, they need to be relevant to the last appointment where you were assessed. But please do ask me at your next appointment if yours has lapsed and you'd like me to restart it!
