The truth about weight gain during midlife 🙂↔️
During perimenopause and menopause, weight can become harder to manage.
It can feel confusing, frustrating and even concerning when your body is changing, and there's no obvious reason why. Many women find they gain some weight during midlife, even if their daily routine remains the same.
Hormonal changes and weight gain
Among other factors (like aging, genetics and lifestyle), hormones can play a role in midlife weight gain:
Research has shown the changes that happen to your hormone levels during perimenopause and menopause can be linked to increased weight gain.
This weight gain tends to occur around the middle of the body (particularly around the tummy). This is because hormonal changes can affect how fat is distributed and stored.
But what can help?
Although there is no magic fix, supporting your hormones could help when it comes to managing weight. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may help some women to lose weight, as it can help to relieve menopause symptoms that make weight harder to manage.
For example, HRT has been shown to help joint aches and pains, which in turn helps women maintain an active lifestyle. By helping to improve overall wellbeing, HRT can play a part in helping support women to take care of their health.
