Cold and wet weather can cause a number of foot problems, including:
Trench foot
Also known as immersion foot, this condition occurs when your feet are wet and cold for a long time. Symptoms include redness, swelling, pain, numbness, tingling, leg cramps, blisters, and ulcers.
Chilblains
Also known as pernio, this condition is caused by inflamed blood vessels in the skin. Symptoms include red patches, swelling, blisters, and itching. Chilblains can be caused by walking from a warm place to a cold place, which can break blood vessels.
Reduced sensation
Cold temperatures can reduce blood flow to the feet, which can lead to a decrease in sensation. This can make it harder to notice injuries or other conditions.
Toenail fungus
Dry and brittle nails are more likely to get infected with toenail fungus in the winter.
Dry, cracked heels
This condition is more common in men and can lead to fissures or cracks that increase the risk of infection.
