Last week at St Thomas Care Home - Barchester Healthcare, we had another lovely afternoon of flower arranging with our wonderful ladies, while the gentlemen enjoyed their weekly model club! 🚂✂️

The ladies got creative with a stunning selection of fresh flowers, bringing a burst of colour and joy to every corner of our home. 🌼🌷🌻 It’s always such a pleasure to see how much everyone enjoys these little moments of creativity and togetherness.

🎨🌸 Creative Moments at St Thomas! 🌸🎨

We recently had a wonderful time in the conservatory, where our residents enjoyed a still life painting session inspired by the beautiful flower arrangements around our home 🌷🖌️

The room was filled with creativity, laughter, and plenty of friendly chatter as everyone got stuck into their artwork. It was lovely to see residents admiring each other’s masterpieces and sharing smiles throughout the session 😊💬

Creative activities like this are so valuable because they:

✨ Boost mood and reduce feelings of anxiety or loneliness
✨ Promote fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination

This week, we’ve been delivering calming sensory therapy sessions to our lovely residents who are unable to leave their beds 💜

These gentle, one-to-one sessions are designed to provide comfort, relaxation, and meaningful interaction, right in the comfort of their rooms 🛏️

🌟 We use:
💡 Soft lighting and soothing sounds to create a calming environment
🌿 Aromatherapy hand massages to promote relaxation and wellbeing
🎶 Familiar music to spark joy and memories

Sensory therapy can help:
✔️ Reduce anxiety and agitation
✔️ Improve mood and mental wellbeing
✔️ Stimulate the senses and encourage gentle engagement
✔️ Provide comfort and connection for those living with dementia or limited mobility

💬 One-to-one time ensures residents feel truly seen, heard and supported. It’s also a chance to build trust, share stories, and enjoy quiet moments of peace together 💕

🌞 What a quacking good afternoon we had yesterday! 🦆💦

We took a little trip out to Barton Mill in Old Basing with our lovely residents, and it was just what we needed! 💛 The sun was shining, the ducks were out in full force, and there were plenty of smiles all round. 😄

Everyone enjoyed a few cold drinks, some tasty snacks, and of course, plenty of time relaxing by the water and soaking up the peaceful views. 🍹🥪🌿

🎶 Yesterday afternoon, we were delighted to welcome the talented Salvation Army Band to perform in the beautiful, historic chapel at our home. The uplifting music filled the room, creating a warm and joyous atmosphere for everyone present.🤩

Our residents and staff all joined in with great enthusiasm, singing along to the timeless hymns and enjoying every moment of this special visit. It was heart-warming to see smiles all around as the melodies brought back cherished memories and sparked new ones.

A huge thank you to the Salvation Army Band for sharing their wonderful gift of music with us and making the afternoon truly memorable. 💒🎺✨

On Thursday, we said a fond farewell to our amazing Head of Maintenance, Imre, as he sets off for early retirement back home in Hungary. 🌍

Imre has been a much-loved part of the St Thomas family for just over 4 years, always going the extra mile to keep everything running smoothly (often with a smile and a joke along the way! 😊🔧). His dedication, kindness, and hard work will be deeply missed by staff and residents alike.

🎾🍓 Wimbledon Fun Across Our Homes 🎾🥂

Residents and patients across the country had a delightful time following the annual Wimbledon tennis tournaments.

Many homes and hospitals were decorated with themed flags and banners, as residents and patients engaged in a range of enjoyable activities, including mini tennis championships, quizzes and interactive sessions.

The big tennis enthusiasts were thrilled to watch the famous matches virtually from the comfort of their armchairs and to join the afternoon tea parties with strawberries and cream, Pimm’s and champagne.

🌻 Summer Fete Sunflower Magic🎨🌞

Our talented residents have been busy getting creative for our upcoming Summer Fete, bringing sunshine indoors with their stunning 3D sunflower decorations! 🌻✨

Using their fine motor skills, they carefully folded and bent paper petals to build beautiful 3D blooms, each one unique, just like them! With photos of real sunflowers for inspiration, they also painted their own vibrant versions, adding a personal splash of colour.🎨🖌️

🍻⚽ Gents Club Fun at St Thomas! ⚽🍻

What a brilliant afternoon we had at our Gents Club this week! 🍺🧀 Residents gathered to enjoy some refreshing beers, tasty snacks and a lively game of football on the telly. 📺⚽ The atmosphere was full of laughter, cheers and good conversation, and not just from the gents! 😉

Despite the name, we had a few lovely ladies who fancied a pint and a bit of footie, and they were more than welcome to join in the fun. 🍻💬 Everyone enjoyed the refreshments, the company, and the shared moments.

These kinds of social clubs are so valuable, especially for our residents living with dementia. 💙 Engaging in familiar activities like watching sports or sharing a drink, can spark memories, boost mood, and encourage meaningful interactions. Plus, the sense of routine and belonging makes a real difference to emotional well-being. 🧠✨

🎉 Farley Gardens is Now Open 🎉

Our new luxury care home in has opened its doors in style, with a Grand Opening performed by the Worshipful Mayor of the Borough of Bracknell, Councillor Janet Cochrane, in front of invited guests from the local community.

Our CEO, Dr Pete Calveley, and Senior General Manager, Simona Cioinac, hosted the event and invited guests to view the stunning new 62-bed care home, which is now open and welcoming its first residents.

We’re delighted to share that Hall Park Care Home in passed a recent Care Quality Commission inspection with ‘Outstanding’ ratings - the best possible ratings the home can achieve – across the board, after being praised for operating a safe, effective, responsive, caring and well-led service.

🐝🍯 What a Buzz! 🐝🍯

As part of our Live Virtual Events programme, residents and patients across the country enjoyed a fascinating virtual talk yesterday, led by expert beekeeper Julia Young, on The Wonderful World of Bees.

Everyone was absolutely captivated by her stories – from the intricate waggle dance to the royal drama of bee regicide. Who knew the life of a honeybee could be so exciting?

It was a great opportunity to learn more about nature, hives and the extraordinary teamwork of bees.

To make things even more exciting, the talented chefs at our homes prepared delicious themed treats and refreshments - including honey sandwiches, honey flapjacks and tea sweetened with local honey.

Lindum House Care Home in recently welcomed local heroes from the fire brigade for a fantastic ‘Coffee with a Firefighter’ event.

Residents, colleagues and visitors enjoyed chatting with the firefighters, learning more about their daily duties and hearing fascinating stories from the local community – all over cups of freshly brewed tea and coffee.

Head Chef Matt prepared a mouth-watering selection of cupcakes especially for the occasion.

Adding to the fun, children from Safe 'n' Sound Nursery also joined in, bringing even more smiles and excitement to the day.

🎉 Exciting News from Barchester 🎉

We’re thrilled to share that Natasha Lazovic, Managing Director of Barchester’s South Division, has been promoted to our Executive Board as Chief Operating Officer.

The news came just as Natasha celebrated an incredible 11 years with Barchester – a fitting milestone for such a well-deserved recognition.

A trained nurse, Natasha first came to the UK from Serbia in 1994. She joined Barchester in May 2014 as Regional Director leading 10 homes, which then doubled to 20 as Senior Regional Director. As Managing Director, Natasha was in charge of 87 care homes across the South.

With Natasha stepping into her COO role, we’re also announcing a restructure of the South Division. It will now form tow new, more focused regions: led by Duncan Edwards who becomes Managing Director of the South West Division and Michelle Macadangdang who is promoted to Managing Director of the South East Division.

Commenting on her new role, Natasha said: “It has been my absolute privilege to be Managing Director of the South division, I have loved working with each and every one of my homes but I move onto my new position happy in the knowledge that Michelle and Duncan with be excellent new Managing Directors for their respective divisions. I am eager to see what my new role brings, I look forward to getting to know all of the teams, patients and residents in my new homes and hospitals across the country.”
