Primrose – a sweet little kiss in springtime!
Apart from being one of the first flowers sprouting up in spring at sometimes unexpected places, to me it is the first flower to eat in spring (just one blossom, I’ve not yet foraged these little gems in any greater amounts).
Eating the flower is nothing short of a sweet drop of honey melting on your tongue (and that is probably just what it is).
The flowers, pods, leaves and roots of this plant are edible and have been used for centuries in herbal medicine. The leaves contain Vit C and essential minerals.
Historically the flowers were considered to heal wounds, cuts, burns and various skin ailments. They were also considered a remedy for muscular rheumatism, gout and paralysis.
Today the flowers are used in many creams and eyewashes for inflammations, acne and wrinkles.
The leaves can be eaten as green salad (with a slightly spicy taste of aniseed), or cooked as soup or stuffing for meats.
The whole plant is a sedative and has expectorant (facilitating the expulsion of mucous from the respiratory tract) qualities. A tincture made from fresh blossoms is used to address restlessness, insomnia and digestive issues, and an infusion of the dried root (harvested in the autumn) can be used against nervous headaches (as a warning, higher dosages are used to facilitate vomiting).
In Victorian England the Primrose (Primula vulgaris) was associated with young love and devotion which made it a popular flower for Valentine’s Day.
So when you are out and about on one of these spring days with your loved one, why not offer her to taste this kiss of sweetness from you Heart?!! πŸŒΊβ˜€οΈπŸ’–

Cleavers – the spring cleanser!
This is one of my top 3 foraging favourites that are all around us now in our hedgerows and fields at this time of year.
My children fondly remember it as β€œsticky willy”, the stuff you throw at your fathers back to have a giggle with your friends.
Together with nettles, cleaver (Galium aparine, also known as goosegrass, amongst many other names) is one of the first sources for vitamin C as well as other key vitamins and minerals in the wild, traditionally long awaited after the dark and scarce winter months.
Cleavers is a mover with diuretic effects on lymph vessels and glands, kidneys, and the liver. With numerous health benefits it is foremost known to support the lymphatic system in flushing out toxins, cleansing the lymph vessels/glands (like swollen tonsils and glands in groin, breast and armpits) and can reduce swelling or oedema.
It is also supportive of kidneys, liver, and the urinary tract, particularly if you suffer from bladder infections or UTI’s. Other benefits might include help with skin conditions, like (sun)burns and acne, and general immune support by boosting the production of white blood cells.
Cleaver is believed to be safe to consume both orally and topically. It has been used in some traditions to prevent pregnancies and as treatment for gonorrhoea – so I think you should refrain from consuming it if you are trying to conceive, are pregnant or breastfeeding.
It can be freshly juiced, dried and prepared as infusion, or simply put (crushed) in cold water overnight and drunk in the morning (my favourite, keeping it simple).
Take you pick!

Pain, they say, is a powerful teacher.
But have you not been sitting in the classroom all along, just not paying attention?! πŸ™
