Most Mother’s Day gifts are chosen quickly.

Flowers.
Dinner.
Something thoughtful — but familiar 💐

This week we’ve been talking about the mental load of motherhood.
The constant planning.
The nervous system that rarely switches off.

So the question becomes:

What would appreciation look like if it actually reduced something? 🤍

Not another gesture.
But space.

Space to rest.
Space to feel supported.
Space where she isn’t holding everything together. 🌿

Stillpoint gift cards are available for those who want to give something considered this year.

With Mother’s Day approaching in a couple of weeks we thought we’d take the time to reflect on what it takes to be a Mother💛

There’s a reason mothers feels exhausted — and it’s not what you think.

It isn’t just the visible tasks.
It’s the anticipating.
The remembering.
The constant mental tracking of what’s next.

Researchers call it cognitive labour — the invisible management of family life.

A European survey of nearly 10,000 mothers found:
• Over two-thirds feel mentally overloaded
• Around one-third report anxiety
• Nearly one in five report burnout

University of Bath research shows this planning load doesn’t stop after the baby stage.

It shifts.
It rarely disappears.

We appreciate all that you do mums! 💛

📌 Save this if it taught you something new about motherhood.

You don’t have to push through this. 🤍

If bonding has felt harder than you expected, that doesn’t make you a bad mum.

After birth, your body is still recovering.
Sleep is broken.
Your system is adjusting.

Sometimes what feels emotional is also physical.

Gentle postnatal osteopathy can support both you and your baby during this transition 🌿

You don’t have to “just get on with it.”

Appointments available this month.

Bonding doesn’t always feel magical 🤍

And almost no one talks about that part.

This reflection was shared with us by our acupuncturist, Julie Ashdown, drawing on traditional Chinese Medicine principles around rest, regulation and connection.

If you’re sitting at home in Bath, holding a baby you longed for… yet feeling flat, disconnected or unsure — you are not abnormal. You are not ungrateful. And you are not alone.

One perspective that isn’t spoken about enough is this:

Connection deepens when the body feels safe enough to rest 🌿

Sleep disruption.
Hormonal shifts.
A nervous system that hasn’t fully exhaled since birth.

When the body remains on alert, it prioritises coping over openness. That doesn’t mean love isn’t there. It may simply mean your system needs steadiness before it can soften.

And here’s the part many capable, high-functioning people struggle with:

You don’t have to just get on with it.

You don’t have to push through quietly.
You don’t have to wait until it feels worse.
You don’t have to earn support.

There are gentle ways we can support your recovery and regulation — creating space for your body to settle, so connection can grow naturally rather than feeling forced 🌸

If this resonates, save it for the days you question yourself.
And share it with someone who may need quiet reassurance 🤍

You don’t need another communication tip.

🤲You need a body that feels supported🤲

When you’re constantly tense or exhausted, patience is harder. Conversations feel heavier. Reactions are quicker.

Supporting your body helps to change the baseline.

🌿At Stillpoint, our osteopathy, acupuncture and reflexology appointments are designed to help you unwind, reset and feel steadier - so you can show up differently at home and at work🌿

If you’ve been feeling reactive, drained or disconnected, this is your sign.

There’s one thing that quietly shapes how we show up in our relationships — and it’s not communication skills or willpower.
It’s how regulated your nervous system feels.

🌿This perspective comes from Julie Butterworth, one of our acupuncturists at Stillpoint, who often sees how emotional stress shows up in the body long before people realise what’s happening.

When stress builds, emotional flexibility tightens.
We react instead of respond.
We snap, shut down, or feel disconnected — even from people we care deeply about.

In Five Element acupuncture, emotional health is about flow.
When emotions can move freely, we feel calmer, more grounded and more connected in our relationships.
When that flow is disrupted by stress or overwhelm, the body holds tension — and emotional regulation becomes harder.

Acupuncture gently supports the nervous system, helping the body settle, regulate and find its natural rhythm again.
This creates the internal space to respond rather than react, and to feel safer in your body — which directly impacts emotional wellbeing and connection.

This isn’t just about relaxation.
It’s about supporting mental health, emotional balance and the way you relate to others — especially during busy, demanding seasons of life.

❤️If emotional overwhelm, stress or disconnection feels familiar, you’re not alone.
