🍏 Core Strengthening: The message is wrong.

Core exercises have their place in early rehab.

It's just not the be all and all for lower back pain.

There is something wrong with the messages being shared about what it does for your spine.

I've been doing this job for many years and I have lost count of the amount of people I have seen with chronic pain because they are still trying to brace and protect their spine with every movement.

The spine just isn't designed to be protected

It needs challenging loads and movement regularly. Without thinking.

Just doing. Repetitively.

Core strengthening can be a good way of lightly loading the spine, but it is no more than that.

🚫It is not magically going to stabilise, support or reduce pain better than other forms of exercise.

If anything I can prevent the progression of spinal loading as often people stop there.

It's just not enough for most.

If this resonates. Let's talk below 👇

Inflammation: What if it's good? 🤔

There are conditions where inflammation can get out of hand and make our lives difficult, and it can be a negative if chronically raised, but following acute tissue injury this isn't always the case.

Post injury it is designed to:
✔ Protect
✔ Clean up damage
✔ Start repair
✔ Restore function

All of these are GOOD things we need to get better.

Knowing when and how to push the boundaries post injury is where we come in.

Understanding this, alongside I understanding the ideas, concerns and expectations of the person we are treating is very important.

Sometimes, it's the simple understanding that helps.

Other times it's more complex.
..That's the challenge of treating people because we are all unique.

🧘‍♀️Stretching: Is there any point?

Well,..... It depends.

What's the goal?
Is it relaxation, improving range post surgery or after acute injury, or relieving a feeling of stiffness? Then Carry on.

Anything else; strength, function, fitness, muscle length, then the research doesn't back it in comparison with strength and cardiovascular training.

If you don't have time, don't waste your time with passive stretching alone because it isn't making any meaningful long term changes that will impact on your recovery goals.

⚠️ Spinal Pain that isn't improving? Consider getting an expert opinion

🤕 🩼 No other musculoskeletal condition creates more disability, concern or worry than spinal pain, particularly those experiencing neural symptoms

👨‍⚕️The management of these cases can require specialist communication, load management and effective re-assurance.

🗣️ Effective reassurance comes from knowing conditions, red flags, pathways and surgical and non-surgical options in detail to help plan a pathway forwards.

Have you seen multiple people about your neck, back pain or sciatica and you still have no improvement?
