Yoga taught me the importance of balance my existing flexibility with STRENGTH 💪 I have always been naturally flexible but didn’t realise that this was causing me injury and stress in the body!!!

In my classes you can learn to build strength and flexibility at the same time, building stability around the joints before attempting deep stretches. It isn’t easy, but you will feel AMAZING and your body will thank you for it!!

Classes at RD Hair, Body & Soul (Bawtry):
Tuesdays 8.30-9.30am: Wake up & flow
Thursdays 6.30-7.30pm: Vinyasa flow

Online class:
Sundays 10-11am: Vinyasa flow

yoga theme of the week: BALANCE ⚖️

My classes and posts this week will teeter around the topic of balance (pardon the pun). More than just referring to typical balance poses like Vrksasana 🌲 (tree pose) and Gsrudasana 🦅 (eagle pose, as demonstrated in this photo), in yoga we practice to balance the breath, emotions, strength & flexibility, work & our personal life and much more…

A yoga practice encourages balance of mental, physical, energetic and spiritual bodies for a balanced ‘whole’. If we meet life from a balanced state of clarity we will have a greater chance of overcoming obstacles and succeeding in our personal goals than if we approached life than from an over-emotional, disturbed state of being.

The concept of balance shows up in so much of yoga theory and philosophy, and I will be exploring this both on and off the mat this week! If you want to take this journey with me, join me for my in person classes (can be booked via link in bio) OR in my online class beginning this Sunday 10am! Drop me a message if you would like more info.

Day 5 of isolation and Erica & Pieter joined me for a bit of yoga fun in the sun this glorious morning 🌼

I've been a bit MIA with yoga and teaching recently... Partly due to an ongoing foot injury, partly struggling to find a good life balance since more things have started happening again!

However I really miss regular classes so my Dynamic Flow class will be back tomorrow morning 10-11am, via zoom so you can join from wherever you are 🌍

I am also revising my prices slightly to reflect the time, effort and energy that goes into my teaching.

Timetable:
Thursdays 6.30-7.30pm - Slow Flow

Sundays 10-11am - Dynamic Flow

Prices:
Drop in class: £6
5 Class Pass: £25
*(any class passes already bought are still valid!!)
**student prices available - message me for more info

You can book onto classes by messaging me directly. All abilities welcome 🙏

Reminder that my dynamic flow class isn't on this morning - why not roll out your mat anyway and try out a self practice? 🌼

Have a great day and hope to see you next week!

***YOGA FOR SELF-LOVE & NOURISHMENT – DONATION BASED YOGA CLASS FOR SARSVL***

So many important and necessary conversations are taking place following Sarah Everard’s disappearance and murder. I’ve seen so many women speaking up and sharing experiences and getting angry, as we should.

But it’s hard, tiring, depressing and, honestly, exhausting to read and hear of the harassment and violence that all women face on a daily basis. And to reflect on our own experiences, and how many of these affect us on a deep level yet we overlook because it’s just the norm. It’s a subject that I struggle to talk openly or eloquently about, BUT what I can do is offer a little bit of respite through yoga.

I imagine that there’s plenty of women who, like me, have found this week difficult and draining – so I am going to do something a little different this Sunday and teach a yoga class where we honour ourselves, thank ourselves for showing up and allow time for healing and recharging. So many of you are giving so much of yourselves, but it takes up a lot of energy and it’s important to draw some of that energy back in to your centre and take care of YOU!

The class is tomorrow (Sunday 14th March) 10-11am on Zoom. All are welcome to attend, not just women. We will be raising money for Support After R**e & Sexual Violence Leeds, link in bio to donate (you can donate even if you don’t want to do the class!) Send me a message with a screenshot of your donation and I will send you the link to the class. If you’re not based in Leeds and would like to donate to a charity local to you that does similar work then just let me know  Suggested donation £4 but any amount is welcome. If you can’t make that time the class will be recorded so just let me know and I can send you the recording afterwards.

I really hope lots of us can come together to slow down, listen to the breath and show ourselves some love. Please share this with family and friends, and anyone you think could do with some TLC this weekend 💕🙏💕

***NEW CLASS ANNOUNCEMENT***
Introducing a slower, gentler class on a Thursday evening (starting TOMORROW!), alongside my regular more dynamic Sunday morning class! Both classes take place via Zoom, suitable for all levels, beginners encouraged! Class descriptions down below, please ask if you have any questions! 🥰

🧘‍♀️RESTORATIVE FLOW🧘‍♀️: Beginning with a centering pranayama (breathing exercise) and ending with a long, relaxing meditation, our movements in between will be very breath-focused and mindful. With different options to allow you to add a bit more oomph or slow it down even more, you can tailor every class to whatever you need that day.

💪DYNAMIC FLOW💪: This class will help you energise mind, body and spirit every Sunday morning. Bringing lots of movement (fuelled by the breath) to your morning, we will wake up the whole body by flowing between different postures and through various movements that help you get to know your body and how to move better!

£4 per class OR £15 for a 5 class pass! (prices may have to change quite soon so get in quick to make the most of this offer)

Really looking forward to seeing you on the mat ❤️

Need some motivation to get back on the pole 😜
*****
As I work on making my yoga asana more functional rather than performative (in other words, prioritising healthy movement and long term health benefits over looking pretty) I'm finding it difficult to align my 'yoga self' with my 'dance self'.
Although I've not really danced much since covid hit, it's always been an important part of my life and, of course, places such huge significance on the aesthetic. Making shapes and movements that are pleasing to look at.

In particular, the aerial world encourages extreme flexibility. This can look incredible and gorgeous, and is functional in the way that it contributes something to the aim of dance to produce something that people want to look at. (of course dance can also be just for oneself, to move and flow and feel amazing, but here I'm more talking about dance in performance)

But when we practice yoga, the ultimate "goal" is very different. We don't practice to look good (or at least we shouldn't!), we practice to increase self-awareness, improve mind and body function and to eventually achieve enlightenment. Yet in the West, an increased emphasis on flexibility and stretching to achieve the "full expression of the pose" (whatever that means) is turning the practice into a performance. I admit that my dance brain and ego kinda loves this, especially as a flexible person. But my yoga brain is beginning to override this instinct, and to stop my body from diving straight into extreme range of motion just because it looks good.

Is the answer to fully separate the yoga me from the dance me? To allow my body into positions on the pole that I refrain from on the mat? There must be a better way to combine the 2 practices without undermining either. Looking forward to thinking and meditating on this much more 💭🧘‍♀️

Any yogi dancers have any thoughts on this get in touch, I would love to hear how you consolidate the yoga and dance aspects of your life! ✌️

This year for me will be one of LEARNING!

I was listening to Sadguru as a guest on Aubrey Marcus podcast a few days ago, and something he said really struck me. He urged us to value all that we do not know, because when we do, "the longing to know, the seeking to know and the possibility of knowing becomes real." Sometimes we get so obsessed with what we believe we already know, that we forget that there is an entire world of wonderful things yet to be discovered and uncovered. And this process of discovery and education can be so much fun!

So let's listen to Sadguru when he tells us "always identify, not with our knowledge, but with our ignorance."

Today I'm starting an online Yoga Anatomy course to finally delve into this topic of the human body that really fascinates me. I can't wait to confront my own ignorance, and enjoy being a student!! And the best thing about gaining all this knowledge is that I will then be able to share it with my own students in my classes ♥️

⭐ My Sunday morning zoom classes begin again tomorrow at 10am! Can't wait to get back on the mat and teaching 😜 message me if you're interested in joining this all levels class ⭐
