We often receive questions about which method of wax removal is best; microsuction or irrigation (ear syringing). The truth is, everyone is different, and what works best can vary significantly from person to person.
It's important to note that there are contraindications to both procedures, for example irrigation (ear syringing) is not recommended for anyone who has previously undergone ear surgery or experienced an eardrum perforation at any time, whilst microsuction may not be the ideal choice for people with sensitivity to loud noises (hyperacusis) or for those who find it challenging to remain still during a procedure.
Additionally, we've found that firmer wax is generally better removed by microsuction, while very soft or "sloppy" wax is often easier to clear with irrigation (ear syringing). We also may carry out instrumentation, where the wax is instrumented from the ear without using any machine or noise.
This is why, at our clinic, we conduct a comprehensive assessment of each patient before even examining their ears. This allows us to determine the most appropriate and effective procedure for you on the day of your appointment.
