🎉🎂 A big (belated!) Happy Birthday to our lovely Karen from all of us here at Bawtry Podiatry Clinic! We hope you had the most wonderful celebrations and that you enjoy your well-deserved holiday in beautiful Kefalonia, Greece with your feet up. 🇬🇷☀️

When Karen returns, she’ll be semi-retiring 🥳 and cutting her clinic days down to 3 per week – Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. We’re so pleased for her as she enjoys a little more well-earned downtime, while still continuing to care for her patients. 💙👣

👟 The Importance of Good Footwear 👟

Are your shoes too tight? Are you squeezing into a pair that’s too small just because they’re your favourite?

The truth is, the wrong footwear can cause all kinds of issues – from corns and calluses to long-term problems with your joints and posture.

The main thing we see in clinic is ingrown, painful toenails. One of the simplest ways to help prevent or reverse these is by finding a pair of shoes that fit your feet correctly. Being squashed in is doing your feet no favours!

✅ Try switching to a good, supportive pair of trainers – look for ones with a wide toe box to give your toes room, cushioned soles to reduce pressure, and built-in arch support to keep your feet properly aligned. Not only will this help with comfort, but it can also reduce the risk of pain in your feet, ankles, knees, and even your back.

What can I expect during nail surgery?
Nail surgery is a safe and effective procedure, carried out under local anaesthetic. This means your toe will be completely numb, so you won’t feel any pain during the treatment. Many of our patients like to bring along some headphones and relax with music while we do the work. 🎧

Types of Nail Surgery:
We offer two different approaches, depending on your needs:

Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA)

Only a thin section of the affected nail is removed.
The area is treated with a chemical called Phenol to stop the problematic edge from growing back.
This is usually recommended when just one side of the nail is causing issues.

Total Nail Avulsion (TNA)

The entire nail is removed.
This is often chosen for severely thickened, deformed, or painful nails.
In most cases, we apply Phenol to prevent regrowth.
For fungal infections, we may skip Phenol and instead treat the nail bed to encourage healthy regrowth.

Before Your Surgery:

You’ll first attend an initial consultation to make sure this treatment is suitable.
A pre-operative assessment and written consent are required.
If you’re under 16, a parent or guardian must provide consent.

What’s Included in the Cost:

The surgical procedure
Two post-operative appointments
All dressings and aftercare
An advice pack to guide your recovery

Here are some top tips & tricks from us at Bawtry Podiatry Clinic to help manage the pain:

✅ Stretch it out – gentle stretches for your calves and the sole of your foot can reduce tension.
✅ Roll it away – try rolling a tennis ball or a frozen water bottle under your foot for relief.
✅ Support matters – wear supportive shoes with cushioning to reduce strain.
✅ Rest & recover – avoid long periods of standing or high-impact activity, rest and raise your foot where possible.
✅ Seek help – if pain persists, professional podiatry treatments can make all the difference.
