šø Menopause, Sugar & Skin
- My Personal Journey šø
Over the past year, Iāve found myself navigating medical menopause - and Iāll be honest, itās been one of the most eye-opening chapters of my life.
What surprised me most wasnāt just the fatigue or the mood swings⦠it was the intense sugar cravings and how they began to affect everything - from my energy levels, how Iāve been able to show up in all the aspects of my life but my skin health too, which of course effects my confidence.
When our hormones shift, our cortisol (stress hormone) can spike more easily, and that often sends us reaching for quick sources of comfort like sugar or caffeine. But what I didnāt realise at first was just how much this hormonal dance was showing up on my skin ā particularly with breakouts along my jawline, dryness, and dullness that just didnāt feel like āme.ā
Even as a skin specialist, in panic and desperation I opted to exfoliate more, masking more ā but the more I tried to ācorrectā my skin, the more fragile it became. What my body (and skin) truly needed wasnāt more effort⦠it was more calm.
⨠The real shift happened when I focused on:
1ļøā£ Calming my nervous system - gentle walks, breathwork, prioritising rest, and allowing stillness. Lowering cortisol naturally has reduced my sugar cravings and helped me feel grounded again.
2ļøā£ Simplifying my skincare - a gentle cleansing routine, a deeply hydrating and nourishing moisturizer (especially important during menopause when the skin barrier weakens), and most importantly⦠not over-exfoliating.
Our skin mirrors our inner world. When stress and hormones fluctuate, the skin often speaks for us - itās simply asking for balance and kindness.
So if youāre going through something similar, please know - youāre not alone. Your body is incredibly wise, and with the right care (inside and out), you can find your glow again. š
