🧠 Massaging the skin may help protect the brain.
In a groundbreaking discovery, scientists have found a non-invasive way to double the brain’s natural waste-clearing ability — simply by stimulating lymphatic vessels beneath the skin.
Researchers at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) showed in mice that gentle mechanical stimulation of lymphatic vessels in the face and neck boosts cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage. This system is crucial for flushing away harmful substances linked to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
The treatment not only doubled CSF outflow but also restored proper drainage in older mice — without the need for drugs or surgery. Even more, the team uncovered previously unknown drainage routes from the brain to superficial lymph nodes via facial lymphatics, which remain active even during aging.
The findings complete the anatomical map of CSF outflow and suggest the potential for wearable or clinical devices designed to enhance brain cleansing. While human trials are still needed, this gentle approach could one day provide a safe, preventive therapy for Alzheimer’s and other brain disorders.
