Happy New Year!
Thanks so much to all of the yogis that attend my classes and enable me to earn a living out of doing something I love so much. But most importantly, thanks for allowing me to spend time with each and every one of you every week. You all mean so much to me and are a massive part of my life. Thank you for being a part of it and for being there.
Those of you who know me well will know I am not the sort to post proverbs or insightful sayings. But today, allow me just this once to stray from my normal and impart some advice, ad lib.
With the new year comes the resolutions, the affirmations, the new 'attitude' to life, the hobbies, books to read, places to travel, the catch-ups with long lost friends and relatives, the new groups to join and old ones to quit, diets, exercise regimes, etc, etc! The end of the year brings about in us a desire to rest, recover, and take that next year a bit 'easier', but we often set ourselves up to crash because we implement too many changes too quickly.
2026 isn't a 'clean slate' to be filled with new duties and demands. And it certainly isn't going to magic away all the stuff in our lives we would like to clear out to make way for new and more exciting or interesting things. We all know, life is what we make it, but sometimes we can't see the wood for the trees because we don't know how to step back from the busy. Modern life has demanded we always be busy and it's a habit hard to break. We can get lost longing for a future we aren't sure how to create, fretting about the unknown, and feeling regretful about the past. As the Buddha said, 'We can be peaceful, happy and free in this moment'. What the Buddha was describing is 'mindfulness'; being present and aware.
Through the practices of yoga and meditation the ability to be mindful starts to become natural and a part of everyday life. Anxiety lessens and a feeling of contentment can become the new normal. What the body needs in the form of movement, nourishment, and general care becomes innate knowledge. I like to believe many of my yogis and mindfulness & meditation practitioners have found this to be true. I hope that others who haven't yet discovered that inner peace, which allows us to flourish and enjoy life in the present, may add to their 2026 list of plans and aspirations an activity which will help them become more mindful.
Have a wonderful 2026 and enjoy every moment, for you are only truly alive in the present.
