Tag your pregnant friends!
Black Friday encourages people to spend, spend, spend. It can be an expensive time of year, never mind having a baby on top. So I am going against the grain! I find it hard to put a price on antenatal education and hypnobirthing preparation, it is so important. I want every family to have to have all the information they need and to be empowered to make their decisions based on their values and needs. Unfortunately I have to charge for my services because bills don't pay themselves! But for this one time I am actually giving my time, my knowledge, my skills all away for free!!! 22 years working in the birthing world is a lot of valuable knowledge and experience.

**So what will you get?**
12 hours of antenatal education, with hypnobirthing techniques, either in the comfort of your own home (area depending) or via Zoom.
Scroll through my feed for more information on what my classes include or DM me.

Great news about pregnancy yoga 🧘🏼‍♀️🙌🏻
But you guys already knew that right? 🥰

A reminder that researchers looking at the effectiveness of prenatal yoga on delivery outcomes undertook a meta-analysis with interesting results.

They, "identified that yoga improved vaginal delivery, decreased premature delivery and birth weight of newborns, shorten the labor duration." (Rong et al 2020).

A note about the birth weight finding before anyone asks. This doesn't mean that the babies were compromised or didn't grow well. The average weight of the babies in the yoga and non-yoga groups was within normal limits and the researchers seem to be suggesting that this might mean that women who did yoga in these studies had babies who were less likely to be affected by gestational diabetes, but this needs more research.

The authors concluded that, "Prenatal yoga is an effective complementary medicine to improve delivery outcomes and not to increase the risk of fetus, which is worth recommending to pregnant women."

Not all of the studies involved in this meta-analysis were of high quality, but it's great that this gives us some evidence and a better idea of what we need to look at in future research.

“Boris if you need some ideas for bedtime reading - this is your book!”

Maternity services in the UK are in crisis, there is a shortage of around 3,500 midwives. When I started as a student midwife 13 years ago the figure was still the same. I’ve spent my whole career working in a system that is understaffed, underpaid and undervalued. Working as a midwife is an emotionally challenging job and sometimes it takes it’s toll on you.

I’ve made the leap into education, I now teach the midwives of the future but I can’t help but worry for those students, my brave colleagues I’ve left behind, how will they continue to cope in a system that is pushed to breaking point 😢

Boris Johnson please read this book and help nurture maternity staff 😩

Thank you for writing this profound book 🙏

⭐️Home Breech Birth⭐️
As a midwife you rarely see vaginal breech births (unless unplanned) as most women are offered elective Caesarean sections. So watching this vaginal breech birth teaches me so much about the physiology of birth when the bottom comes first. It’s intense watching the video, I felt like I wanted to intervene, it takes a very skilled midwife to sit back, be calm and ‘hands off’ the breech and of course a powerful mum!

Well there’s the research ⬇️ Levine et al (2021) induction of labour increases the rate of Caesarean section (as if we didn’t already know this).
Sometimes there’s a genuine medical need for induction of labour and other times induction of labour doesn’t end in Caesarean section. However, the research says you’re more likely to end up with a Caesarean if you are induced. Being “post dates” is not a medical reason. Only accept induction of labour if it feels right for you and right for your baby. If it doesn’t feel right, then discuss with your Midwife/ Dr to make an alternative plan for waiting for spontaneous labour.
Thanks sarawickham.com

A new study has reinforced our knowledge that, in real world settings, healthy women are more likely to end up having a caesarean if they have induction of labour than if they go into labour on their own.
⭐️
The study will be published in the European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology.
⭐️
The authors conclude that, “Awaiting the natural onset of labor, if there are no maternal or fetal reasons to intervene, may yield no worse a perinatal outcome than an earlier induction of labor. The consequences of a cesarean delivery are known to be associated with immediate and longer-term maternal morbidity, and this may be potentially avoided, if elective inductions of labor can be minimized.” (Levine et al 2021).
⭐️
This result, which echoes that of a number of similar studies, is in contrast to the findings of the often cited ARRIVE trial.
⭐️
So why is that?
⭐️
One reason is that the participants in the ARRIVE trial were not representative of all women. Another is that women in the ARRIVE trial had very medicalised care. And, as Levine et al (2021) note, there’s a difference between what happens in the setting of a trial, and in the real world. I’ve written lots on this, so here are some resources if you’d like to know more.
⭐️
You can read Levine et al’s study at https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0301211521002463
⭐️
If you’re wondering whether induction is right for you or wanting to read more about the evidence, check out the resources on my website or my book, “Inducing Labour: making informed decisions.” www.sarawickham.com/iol
⭐️
And if you’re a midwife or birth worker and you’d like to better understand the issues and develop your confidence with research, we’re looking at a number of aspects of induction in Gathering in the Knowledge 2021. See https://app.ruzuku.com/courses/66197/about

Wowzers how fast does this baby come through the pelvis?🙋‍♀️ Last week in pregnancy yoga I was describing lots of different positions for labour, this shows that when you find that sweet position that opens up the pelvis, space is created and voila!
🌈🌈

Posted • Fast Catch! Keeping me on my toes. I love this video because it shows how fast babies can come through with a position change that opens up the pelvis. 💐Welcome little one. Beautiful work Mama🌿🌈
