This is a really interesting article and would be a sensible step in making our roads safer for all.

We have issued a joint response with The College of Optometrists to the BBC feature on vision standards for driving and the calls made by affected families to prevent future road deaths.

The current system is not fit for purpose, and enforcement of visual legal standards is ineffective and unsafe, as highlighted in the Prevention of Future Deaths Report. The first and best step towards safer roads is to make it a legal requirement for every driver to provide evidence of an up-to-date sight test when applying for or renewing a licence.

Without a legal requirement for regular sight tests, mandatory reporting would apply only to those already willing to come forward, and the fear of being reported deters many drivers from having their sight tested, leading to further preventable collisions and tragedies.

We support introducing mandatory, regular sight tests for all motorists and urge that any policy change must carefully consider its impact on road safety and public health.
