Improv Inspired Skills That Will Transform How You Show Up at Work

When people hear the word improv, they often imagine actors on stage making things up as they go along.

What they rarely realise is that improv is really about how humans handle uncertainty — how we listen, respond, stay calm, and communicate when things aren’t scripted.

That’s exactly what most workplaces demand every day.
Meetings, interviews, presentations, stakeholder conversations — none of these go exactly to plan.

The people who thrive aren’t necessarily the loudest or most confident. They’re the ones who can stay present, clear, and composed when pressure shows up.

Below are seven improv inspired skills I regularly use in my work at Rise With Rich, and how they directly support professional confidence and communication.

1. Presence Before Performance

The Skill: Improv teaches you to focus on what’s happening now, not what you think should happen next.
Why It Matters
Overthinking pulls us into anxiety. Presence brings us back into clarity.
At Work
When you’re present:
• you speak more slowly
• you listen more accurately
• your responses sound grounded

Try This
Before speaking:
• feel your feet
• take one slow breath
• speak at 90% of your normal pace
That small reset changes how you’re perceived.

2. Listening Is a Leadership Skill
The Skill: In improv, listening is more important than speaking.

Why It Matters
If you’re planning what to say, you’re not fully present.
At Work
Active listening:
• reduces rushed responses
• builds trust
• improves clarity
Try This
Let someone finish completely.
Pause for one breath.
Respond only to what was actually said.

3. Say Less, Mean More
The Skill: Improv scenes become powerful through specificity, not volume.
Why It Matters
Nerves often lead to over explaining or vague language.
At Work
Clear structure builds confidence — for you and the listener.
Try This Framework
Pause → Point → Brief Explanation → Stop
One idea.
One short explanation.
Then stop speaking.

Early morning run followed by cold water swim at 3c with Tom today. Painful initially however the peace and presence I felt after getting out of the lake more than made up for it. This technique has helped me connect more with myself and others. Thank you cold water for being such a beautiful teacher 🙏 🙏
