🤧 Got a cold? Here’s what you need to know 🤧

A common cold is a mild viral infection of the nose and throat. It’s very common and usually gets better on its own — no GP visit needed for most people.

Typical symptoms (build up over 2–3 days):
👃 Runny or blocked nose
🤧 Sneezing
😷 Sore throat
🗣️ Hoarse voice
🤒 Cough
😴 Feeling tired or unwell
➡️ Sometimes a high temperature, aches, or loss of taste/smell

🕒 Symptoms usually last 1–2 weeks (sometimes longer in children).

How to feel better at home:
✔️ Rest and drink plenty of fluids
✔️ Eat well
✔️ Gargle salt water for a sore throat
✔️ Warm drinks (lemon & honey can help)
✔️ Over-the-counter meds like paracetamol or ibuprofen (ask a pharmacist)

🚫 Don’t give aspirin to children under 16
🚫 Avoid smoking
⚠️ Don’t let young children inhale steam (burn risk)

When to get medical advice:
❗ Symptoms last more than 10 days
❗ High temperature for over 3 days
❗ Chest pain or shortness of breath
❗ You have a long-term condition or weak immune system

🧼 Help stop the spread:
Wash hands often, catch coughs and sneezes in tissues, and avoid sharing cups or towels.

👉 Remember: Colds come on gradually. Flu hits fast and feels much worse.

Struggling to keep warm this winter? Some residents may be entitled to free boiler servicing to keep their home comfortable, safe and warm.

Funded by local authority, Better Housing Better Health is offering eligible households the opportunity to apply for boiler service funding.

Who can apply?

The support is available for residents whose health is affected by the cold weather, including (but not limited to) those with:

-Cardiovascular problems
-Respiratory conditions
-Immunosuppressed conditions
-Limited mobility

The boiler service can help improve warmth at home, reduce the risk of breakdowns, and support wellbeing during these colder months.
