Birth without fear is a sentence you don’t hear many women saying out loud. Why? Because we are programmed to believe it is a hideous ordeal we simply have to go through.

Where the mind goes the body follows. It’s so important to take the time when pregnant to look at your fears, address them and let them go. Surround yourself and immerse yourself in all things positive birth. Listen to stories of women who loved giving birth, and kindly ask for the horror stories to wait until after your baby is here.

Here are some of the ways you can help yourself to feel better 💗

What exactly is hypnobirthing?

Most people before learning about it have their misconceptions about hypnobirthing. Lots of people think it’s just for home births (particularly water births) and that is simply about breathing.

Now don’t get me wrong breathing is an essential part but it’s not the only thing. Swipe to see what hypnobirthing is all about 💗

After about an hour or so, I sat on the birthing stool to help get the placenta out as it was really painful. It was here we noticed that I was leaking blood, and it didn’t seem to be stopping. After a while, it slowed down, and we settled into bed.

Jane left, and we were so happy with the birth and how easily it all happened. When I got up to go to the loo, the blood started again and wouldn’t stop. So Luke called Jane back. I lost quite a lot of blood but it was happening slowly that; genuinely if she hadn’t have been there, I wouldn’t have thought there was a problem. Jane tried everything she could but then said she felt I needed to have the injection (I keep forgetting what it’s called), as much as she knew I really didn’t want it. I said please could I try some things first. I tried a tincture. I tried homeopathy, and Jane cut some of the placenta for me to place in my mouth. None of it worked. My BP went low, and I had a high heart rate which showed my body was overcompensating for the loss of blood. So I felt gutted but agreed to the injection. For some reason, it took quite a while to kick in, and in that time, Jane said she needed to call the paramedics, and I agreed. So they turned up, and thank god we had two of the loveliest paramedics who came in and at first said they would take me to the hospital—but then agreed to continuously monitor me for a while to see if I could get the blood to stop. They chatted and helped calm me as I lay there using my hypnobirthing techniques to remain calm and level-headed.

I prayed like I had never prayed before. And within an hour and a half, the injection kicked in, the blood stopped, and my heart rate and blood pressure returned to normal. The injection usually takes about 5 mins to work so I can see why Jane was worried. But honestly she let me make every single choice by myself. I felt totally in control. I’m laying there with my va**na out (covered by an inco pad) two paramedics, Jane and my mum and I’m still in control. I find that so powerful.

Jane stayed over our house and didn't leave us. I just love her so much! And can’t thank her enough x

I remember suddenly it became more intense, and I went round to the side of my lodge and bent over a chair. After a couple of surges there it felt like it was getting close to the time I needed to be up by the pool. I said to Luke after the next surge I need to get back up the garden. That’s exactly what I did. Jane said I walked up the garden like Boudica😂 I had to stop for two surges before making it back to the house.

Suddenly it all happened so fast. On reflection speaking to Jane today, she said from the noises I was making I went into active labour whilst walking up the garden and baby was born in the pool 40 mins later. It was intense, primal and fast. I’m not a quiet birther by any stretch of the imagination, and when I say I roared baby into the world I literally mean I roared! I felt like I couldn’t push through transition for about three contractions but Jane and Mum reminded me I was doing it. I remember thinking ‘you know this is transition Trish, you’ve learnt so much about the adrenaline released here and why we can sometimes feel out of control here.’ I had learnt that if adrenaline had a voice it would say ‘move’ so I was hitting the side of the pool focusing on the noise and feeling in my arm whilst mooing like a cow. I felt a gush of water come out and immediately felt relief. I said I needed to poo. Jane said she would put an inco pad down the loo or else we would be having a toilet baby. I stood up and felt baby coming down. I called Jane and got back into the pool. Luke said today that he was worried at this point as he couldn’t see the head whilst I was telling them the head was there. He was shaking his head to Jane and my mum. His head was definitely there!! Haha

Out came babies head and within seconds out shot baby, and Luke caught him and pushed him through my legs up to me. It took me a min to come back down to earth, but as I started to come back into my body I looked and was so shocked he was a boy! I breastfed in the pool and then got out to lay down on my bed.

There was barely any blood in the pool. We were all so happy it all seemed perfect.

Whilst this is happening, I have my first pocket doula client in America going into labour with her first child! I’m trying to be there for her whilst going through this at the same time. She is in about the same stage of labour as I am, she keeps telling me how much it hurts. So whilst reassuring her I was also trying to get into my hypnobirthing meditation state, it was very surreal. I had an affirmation that said I birth with women all over the world. This is literally so true!

I decide to tell my mum it’s the real thing, and my daughter (15) gets picked up by her dad; she really didn’t want to be here for the birth love her, so she sets up my room for me as an act of love and I wander down to the garden on my own.

Between surges, my mum and toddler come down with snacks and drinks, and my partner is there setting up the fire. Honestly, it was just the perfect setting, and I keep thanking the universe for this moment, taking it all in as I make sounds to help me through. Luke, my partner, is there holding me and rubbing my back as it progresses. I remember feeling so seen and cared for. I have no idea about surge times or what time it was in general but they felt like they were coming quite quickly.

Jane (IM) turns up and says how amazing the space is and hides in the background as she knew how close I was initially to freebirthing, but something (now I know it’s the universe) told us we needed Jane. She asks if I would like baby listened to, and I politely decline (it turns out Theo had a true knot, Jane said it was so lucky I hadn’t said yes to the checks as this could have interfered with the results if we had listened in and we may have headed to the hospital! I love the universe looking out for us!)

I had no idea how long I was there for but I was getting in the zone, singing, dancing and continuously weeing 🙈😂 down at the bottom of my garden under the moon. With my loved ones. The best support team in the world. This labour was so different to my last two. I was moving, standing up right as much as possible and going with my body. It felt safe and calm and beautiful. Everything I had wanted and worked so hard for

My birth story
Warning talk of PPH
🏡 Born at home
👶🏼 Third baby unknown baby boy
🤰Mostly wild pregnancy until the last 6 weeks with appointments from two fab IM’s.

Sorry, this is a long one. If you make it to the end, thank you. 💗💗💗

As I’m sure you are aware I had so so much trauma from my last birth and when I found out I was pregnant I totally freaked. I wanted to book a c-section (in no way am I saying this is easier) but the thought of pushing a baby out made me wake in the night sweating and crying for months. The only way out for me, was in. I delved deep into the birth world, educated myself. Went through some healing and came out much stronger.

Back to the birth. I had several times where I thought labour was starting but it turned out to be Braxton hicks and a few surges here or there. So on the Monday, when I got a few surges on the way to pick up my daughter around 5 pm I didn’t say anything to my partner as I didn’t know if it was the real thing. There were about three surges in an hour.

We got home about an hour and a half later, and I felt a couple more. I didn’t time them but thought ok, this could be it. I sat on my ball but still didn’t say anything. I thought I would go and have a bath and see if they stopped or carried on. My mum was here already to stay for the week but I didn’t want to tell her in case they stopped. In the bath, I messaged my partner and said I think this is it. After about half an hour in the bath, I had done some EFT to get me in the zone. My partner asked if he should call our IM, and I said just wait as it may stop. I said I would text him when the next surge happened, and he could time it (I only got him to time one as I wanted to be in the flow, but I wasn’t sure if I should call Jane, our midwife). He said it had been 9 mins since the surge and he would call her.

So as it will be a week tonight that my surges (contractions) started I thought I would share a snippet of what happened that night.

So I’m offering Pocket Doula services atm as you know I’ve just had a baby. So I will be supporting women via the phone/zoom etc. I had my first pocket doula client message me last Monday and we had a lovely chat. She lives in America and this is her first baby. A few hours later she messages me to say she has gone into labour. As we text I start having contractions and we are around the same stage! I don’t mention this to her as I want to hold space for her, but she tells me she is in a lot of pain as I am getting in the bath doing my tapping and hypnobirthing to get into the zone. Trying to remember all I have learnt.

One of my affirmations was ‘I birth with women all over the world.’ And this was literally happening!

My labour happened really quickly so I had to leave her to go into labour land all the while thinking of her and saying to luke ‘I hope she is ok.’

I went on and had my baby and checked my phone a few hours afterwards and we carried on messaging. She had a long labour so I was able to be there as she was pushing etc and it was beautiful to hold space after I literally knew just how intense labour can be.

Luke and I had two names for a boy Theo and Noah. At the last minute we went with Theo. Today we messaged and I find out she has called her baby Noah.

If that’s not divine and beautiful I don’t know what is 💗

Ps can you spot the blue orb… I prayed to mine and Luke’s dad that night I’m unsure if it is them or the blue energy of Theo that came down from the stars ⭐️ 💙🦋

Look at this. 😍The placenta keeping my beautiful baby alive. I’m ashamed to admit I didn’t even look at my first and second bubbas placentas! But now I’m OBSESSED.

10 amazing facts about placentas

1) It is the only organ pregnant mummas grow from scratch

2) One organ - Multiple functions - Your baby relies solely on you for nutrition and oxygen. The placenta acts as the baby’s lungs to supply oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. It also acts as baby’s kidneys to filter waste products out of the bloodstream.

3) The placenta acts as a gland that secretes hormones during pregnancy. They also play an essential role in supporting baby and childbirth

4) An immune mediator - The placenta helps the immune systems of mum and baby talk to each other so mumma’s body doesn’t see baby as foreign and attack baby

5) The placenta plays a role in the immune system of the developing foetus, protecting it from certain infections and diseases

6) The placenta also plays a role in preparing the mother's breasts for lactation by producing hormones that stimulate milk production

7) The placenta has the potential to be used for medical research and therapeutic purposes, such as developing treatments for certain diseases

8) The placenta also plays a role in preparing the mother's breasts for lactation by producing hormones that stimulate milk production

9) The placenta is a rich source of stem cells, that have the potential to develop into various types of cells in the body. These stem cells can be found in the umbilical cord blood, amniotic fluid, and the placenta itself.

10) Lastly this is the first time I’ve had the placenta encapsulated and within a few days I feel so different to how I’ve felt on this days after my previous births. I highly recommend this!! 💗💗💗💗

All hail the placenta 💗

So you have been offered a VE, but have you been informed of the risks?

So often we are presented with options when it comes to our labours and yet we are not informed that A) it is an option and B) the pros and cons. Informed consent means being presented with both sides and then making a choice that is right for you and your baby.

Have you had a VE? Was it beneficial?
