Honesty in recovery isn’t just about telling the truth to others—it’s about being real with yourself first.
For many people struggling with addiction, denial becomes a way of coping. But real change only begins when you stop hiding from what’s really going on.
Honesty means:
• Admitting when things aren’t okay
• Letting go of excuses
• Taking responsibility for your actions
• Being open to support
It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being honest enough to change.
If you or someone you care about is struggling, support is available.

Honesty is a cornerstone of 12-step recovery — but it isn’t always as simple as “telling the truth.”
Step 9 reminds us to make amends wherever possible, except when doing so would cause further harm. That distinction matters.
In recovery, honesty isn’t about saying everything to relieve your own guilt. It’s about being truthful in a way that considers the impact on others.
Before speaking, it’s worth asking:
Is this helping the other person — or just helping me feel better?
Alcohol addiction doesn’t always look the way people expect. Someone can be working, socialising, and managing daily life—while still struggling with dependence.
Recognising these signs is the first step toward change. If you or a loved one need support, The Haynes Clinic is here to help.

Honesty without thought can do as much harm as a lie. Preventing that harm is crucial both for the person working through the steps and the people they love
Honesty matters in addiction recovery. You will hear that early and often. After years of lying to yourself and everyone around you, learning to tell the

When drinking becomes part of everyday life, it can be difficult to recognise when it’s starting to change.
In the UK, alcohol is often tied to socialising, stress relief, and routine. Because it’s so normalised, the line between habit and problem can become blurred.
What feels manageable on the surface can be much harder to control underneath.
Drinking is deeply embedded in UK culture. It’s present at celebrations, social events, and even in how we cope with stress.
Because it’s so normalised, it can be difficult to recognise when alcohol use becomes a problem. What looks like choice on the surface can feel much harder to control underneath.
Understanding this is often the first step toward change.
Excuses for avoiding or refusing rehab sometimes come from misconceptions about what drug rehab is and how it actually works
Most people who need drug rehab never begin treatment. The reasons for not seeking help may sound convincing, but in our experience, most common

When something that should feel natural starts to feel difficult to control, it’s easy to question what’s really going on.
S*x and love addiction don’t always look obvious.
There’s often no clear breaking point — just patterns that keep repeating, even when you want them to stop.
That’s why understanding what’s driving the behaviour matters.
In our latest article, we explore how these patterns develop, why they’re often misunderstood, and how they compare to conditions like OCD and anxiety.
If this resonates, it might be time to look at it differently.

We talk openly about stress, anxiety, even addiction to alcohol or gambling.
But s*x and love addiction?
That conversation is still missing.
Not because it isn’t happening —
but because it’s uncomfortable.
For many people, it shows up as patterns they can’t seem to break.
Not a lack of willpower — but something deeper.
It can affect relationships, confidence, and mental health, while still being easy to hide on the surface.
And because it’s rarely discussed, most people don’t recognise it as something they can actually get help for.
That’s something we believe needs to change.
We’ve explored this in our latest blog — looking at why s*x and love addiction are so often overlooked, and what a better understanding could look like.
Sometimes, simply recognising what’s going on is the first step forward.

Most people have never even heard of s*x or love addiction.
Yet in the UK, around 1 in 20 people are at high risk of compulsive s*xual behaviour.
That makes it more common than many mental health conditions we openly talk about — and still, it’s largely ignored.
Part of the problem is recognition.
Compulsive s*xual behaviour is only recently defined clinically, and love addiction isn’t formally recognised at all.
But the patterns are clear.
This is about loss of control.
Repeating behaviours despite the consequences.
Wanting to stop — and not being able to.
It can look like functioning on the outside, while struggling internally.
It can mirror conditions like OCD, anxiety, and eating disorders.
And for many people, it stays hidden because of shame and stigma.
We’ve broken this down in our latest blog — including why these conditions are misunderstood, how common they really are, and why more people aren’t getting help.
