Active Life Therapy and Fitness

Active Life Therapy and Fitness I help older adults remain independent and active so they can live life to the full.

Hi, I’m Martin and I am a qualified Personal Trainer and Sports Massage Therapist. I have run my business, Active Life Therapy and Fitness, for the past 4 years in Oakley, Bedfordshire and I have always been passionate about fitness and well-being. My passion for fitness first began at the age of 9, when I began to learn about Olympic weightlifting and isometric exercises. This progressed to a keen interest in martial arts and general weightlifting before I qualified as a gym instructor in 1993. Injuries sustained though these activities piqued my interest in injury prevention, massage and mobility techniques. Educating others continued to interest me and in 2005 I qualified as a music teacher, spending the next 10 years working with children in primary and secondary schools. Throughout this time, I continued to pursue my interests in sport and fitness, particularly in running, mountain biking and swimming. After an accident left me unable to run, I had to start from the beginning again. I combined my knowledge of sports, training and fitness and my skills in teaching and re-trained as a Massage Therapist and Personal Trainer. Experience working with clients in this area has allowed me to gain valuable insights into how and why people get injured as well as how they train. This understanding forms the very foundation of the development of my practice both in massage and personal training as we as through the development of my training programmes. However you feel I can best support you, I will use all of my skills and knowledge to offer you the best treatment, support and advice to help you maintain a healthy life.

There are a number of physical aspects that decline as we get older and keeping active is paramount for a long, independent, pain free life.

• Strength is vital to keep you upright and moving.
• Joint and bone resilience so it doesn’t hurt when doing activities like walking down stairs
• Balance to prevent a fall
• Mobility to get down and up from the floor (especially if you have grand kids)
• Heart and Lungs to keep your blood flowing and keep you active for longer

In this one session I will cover all of these elements.
The first session is FREE by typing in the coupon code FIRSTFREE – tap the APPLY button then PAY. You will then be sent an email to join the Zoom class

Do you know anyone who would benefit from this? If so then please feel free to share this with them.

Monday Move – The Twisting Bear

Extended periods of sitting can lead to restricted mobility.

The Twisting Bear exercise is highly effective for enhancing joint flexibility and promoting range of motion.

This movement builds upon the foundations of the Downward Facing Dog and the Bear exercises.

Once you have mastered these preliminary forms, advance to the Twisting Bear.

It is common for individuals not to reach the floor with their hips initially; consistent practice and gradual progression will facilitate improvement over time.

Benefits include:
• Enhanced whole-body coordination
• Increased overall strength
• Improved flexibility in the hips and back

This exercise supports continued independence by fostering physical resilience.

Fitness Over 50

Here are three key fitness areas to help you stay independent as you age:

• Work on mobility every day.
• Strength train, focusing on your rear body muscles, three times a week.
• Build cardiovascular fitness 2–5 times weekly through activities like walking, hiking, jogging, swimming, tennis or Space Hopping 😊

If you’re over 50, following these steps can support a long, healthy, and pain-free life, keeping you independent for longer.

Please feel free to like, subscribe, and share with anyone who you think could benefit from this advice.

If you are over 60 then falling starts to become a real concern.

With all of this ice around I thought I’d share how you can train to survive and prevent a fall.

In this video we are simulating a slip, or ‘catching’ yourself if you do slip.

I’m holding Lesley back with the towel as she walks forward. Then without warning I let go of some of the resistance. This forces her to ‘catch’ herself before falling.

Great training for helping your nervous system to react to a fall as well as build confidence when going outside in icy conditions.
Feel free to Comment, Like, or Share with someone who would benefit from this 😊

You finally work up the nerve to check your weight after Christmas and—boom! There’s that number, staring back at you with your New Year’s Resolution tagged to it. But be honest—haven’t you made this same resolution last year? Or maybe even several years in a row?

Instead of diving headfirst into intense HIIT routines or searching for rare recipe ingredients from a cookbook you can’t even locate, why not take it easy for a couple of weeks?

Why? Just look at my weight change graph in the image.

From the start of December, I slowly gained weight as I enjoyed more mince pies.

Once the holiday season ends and life goes back to normal, I start adding healthy habits one at a time. Before long, I’m right back to my pre-Christmas weight.

Don’t buy into all the hype about needing new products after the holidays. Sticking with what already works for you, and making just one simple change, will help you succeed in the long run.

Let me know in the comments if this helped you feel a little less stressed about weight loss 😊
