Active Life Therapy and Fitness

Active Life Therapy and Fitness I help older adults remain independent and active so they can live life to the full.

Hi, I’m Martin and I am a qualified Personal Trainer and Sports Massage Therapist. I have run my business, Active Life Therapy and Fitness, for the past 4 years in Oakley, Bedfordshire and I have always been passionate about fitness and well-being. My passion for fitness first began at the age of 9, when I began to learn about Olympic weightlifting and isometric exercises. This progressed to a keen interest in martial arts and general weightlifting before I qualified as a gym instructor in 1993. Injuries sustained though these activities piqued my interest in injury prevention, massage and mobility techniques. Educating others continued to interest me and in 2005 I qualified as a music teacher, spending the next 10 years working with children in primary and secondary schools. Throughout this time, I continued to pursue my interests in sport and fitness, particularly in running, mountain biking and swimming. After an accident left me unable to run, I had to start from the beginning again. I combined my knowledge of sports, training and fitness and my skills in teaching and re-trained as a Massage Therapist and Personal Trainer. Experience working with clients in this area has allowed me to gain valuable insights into how and why people get injured as well as how they train. This understanding forms the very foundation of the development of my practice both in massage and personal training as we as through the development of my training programmes. However you feel I can best support you, I will use all of my skills and knowledge to offer you the best treatment, support and advice to help you maintain a healthy life.

10 Benefits of Regular Relaxation Massages

In today’s busy and stressful world, between work, family and friends it often feels like there’s no time to relax. But taking the time for regular relaxation massages is one of the best ways to improve your physical and mental health. Here are 10 benefits of relaxation massages that might just convince you to add them to your self-care routine:

1️⃣ Stress reduction: This is probably the most obvious benefit of a massage. Massages can reduce cortisol—the hormone associated with stress—by as much as 50%, leaving you feeling calmer and more relaxed.

2️⃣ Improved sleep: If you’re having trouble getting a good night’s rest, a relaxation massage can help. Massages release endorphins and promote cortisol levels, two factors known to improve sleeping habits. And you’ll awaken feeling refreshed and energized.

3️⃣ Higher energy levels: A massage helps to increase circulation, which in turn improves oxygen flow to the muscles. This translates to higher energy levels and better general health.

4️⃣ Pain relief: Those suffering from joint pain and backaches can find solace in a relaxation massage. Massages can alleviate muscle tension and tightness which can help to reduce pain.

5️⃣ Enhanced flexibility: In addition to relieving pain, massages can also help to increase flexibility and range of motion. This is especially useful for athletes who have to be in peak physical condition.

6️⃣ Improved posture: Stress can cause us to hunch forward and affect our posture. Massages can ease tensions in the upper back and neck, resulting in better posture and fewer aches.

7️⃣ Mental clarity: Feeling foggy minded? Relaxation massages help to stimulate the brain by releasing hormones like serotonin. This boosts your energy levels and improves mental acuity.

8️⃣ Reduced anxiety: Research has shown that massages are an effective way to reduce anxiety. As the body relaxes, your anxiety will dissipate, resulting in better overall physical and mental health.

9️⃣ Increased immunoreactivity: Massage therapy has been known to decrease cytokines, which are related to inflammation and can cause many illnesses. Having regular massages can boost your immune system, leaving you feeling healthier and stronger.

1️⃣0️⃣ Improved overall feelings of wellbeing: Life’s stresses can take its toll on the body and the mind. Taking the time for regular relaxation massages can help to clear your mind, reduce stress, and make you more resilient to life’s demands.

Best breakfast!
Marketing and advertising are so good that they make people believe that the best thing for breakfast is cereal – fortified with vitamins, minerals and other stuff 😊But let’s be honest, you probably know that it’s full of…..

Try moving to a less processed and natural way of eating. Here, a handful of nuts will keep me going for hours. It’s food that was designed to be eaten (unless your allergic) and it stops sugar cravings which leads to overeating.
Win win really
And no, fat is good for you and won't make you put on weight 😊

How To Coach Intermittent Fasting - I've Passed!
Another nutrition string to my bow.

I've had such a good experience with Intermittent Fasting (10lbs lost to date) that once I started the process I decided to learn how to coach it safely.

My BMI is now in the Healthy Range instead of Overweight and more importantly my Dad Belly (the big bit which stores unhealthy fat around your organs and is a major cause of various diseases) has dropped by 2 inches.

It feels so good to look in the mirror and know that I have dropped the weight I gained when Sammy was born - 9 Years of improvement :-)

I'm feeling thankful so thank you to all who comment, watch, and support all the crazy stuff I post :-)

The stabilisation work from your shoulders and core are massive on this Crab Toe Touch.

In addition to working your whole body it makes this a much superior alternative to sit ups.

Also, it helps you get up off the floor – all good prep as we age.
Give me the 👍 if this makes sense to you :-) 👍

You’ve been fasting for 10 hours during sleep so your body is burning fat.

You add morning cereal which contains carbs and sugar, which is ok, however, this causes a spike in blood sugar levels.

Spikes are followed by quick lows with your body then demanding more food before lunch.

By not having breakfast you can avoid the high and low and just continue to burn fat

– that doesn’t mean starve yourself BTW, you should always listen to your body and EAT WHEN HUNGRY.

Learning how to manage hunger cravings and eating when hungry are 2 elements of my Nutrition Transformation Program which has helped me loose weight.

Our bodies were designed to thrive during scarcity.

It was uncomfortable and yet the human body still survived – sometimes days and weeks without food. But this was normal.

Today we have a new normal – a time of plenty and comfort.

We seek out comfort and avoid discomfort at all cost thinking of it as bad.

I know that this is not what you want to hear. But is everyone telling you what you want to hear?
“This method is simple”
“You can eat as much as you like and still loose 20lbs”.

They are telling you what you want to hear NOT what you need to KNOW.

You only ever see the success stories, the before and after pictures, the dramatic transformation. You rarely see the 5 years later when the weight is back on with interest.

As a friend I encourage you to embrace a little bit of discomfort – Your future self will thank you for it.
