Active Life Therapy and Fitness

Active Life Therapy and Fitness I help older adults remain independent and active so they can live life to the full.

Hi, I’m Martin and I am a qualified Personal Trainer and Sports Massage Therapist. I have run my business, Active Life Therapy and Fitness, for the past 4 years in Oakley, Bedfordshire and I have always been passionate about fitness and well-being. My passion for fitness first began at the age of 9, when I began to learn about Olympic weightlifting and isometric exercises. This progressed to a keen interest in martial arts and general weightlifting before I qualified as a gym instructor in 1993. Injuries sustained though these activities piqued my interest in injury prevention, massage and mobility techniques. Educating others continued to interest me and in 2005 I qualified as a music teacher, spending the next 10 years working with children in primary and secondary schools. Throughout this time, I continued to pursue my interests in sport and fitness, particularly in running, mountain biking and swimming. After an accident left me unable to run, I had to start from the beginning again. I combined my knowledge of sports, training and fitness and my skills in teaching and re-trained as a Massage Therapist and Personal Trainer. Experience working with clients in this area has allowed me to gain valuable insights into how and why people get injured as well as how they train. This understanding forms the very foundation of the development of my practice both in massage and personal training as we as through the development of my training programmes. However you feel I can best support you, I will use all of my skills and knowledge to offer you the best treatment, support and advice to help you maintain a healthy life.

I’ve launched something new.

Active Ageing Fitness is designed specifically for adults over 60 who want to feel steadier, safer and more confident on their feet.

If you sometimes feel slightly unsteady, nervous on stairs or worried about falling, you are not alone.

This short introduction explains what the channel is about and how to get started.

New balance sessions will be shared every Thursday.

Looking After Your Knees Over 65 Years Old

Is maintaining knee health a priority for you?

For individuals over 65, healthy knees are essential for performing everyday tasks such as walking up and down stairs.

One effective exercise to support mobility is the "Sumo Ball Bounce". To perform this movement:

• Stand with a wide stance, feet turned slightly outward.
• Bend your legs.
• Gently push your knees back.
• Keep your back straight.
• Bounce the ball in a controlled manner.

Please share this with anyone who may benefit from this move. Thank you 😊

Balance Training for Adults Over 65

The Step-Up exercise is essential for maintaining leg strength as we age.

Navigating stairs may become more challenging over time; however, practicing this movement with a small step can be beneficial.

In this example, the Step Up incorporates a balance component by utilising a softer box, which encourages greater activation of the glutes and ankles.

This approach effectively prepares you for daily activities such as walking outdoors or negotiating uneven surfaces, thus supporting training and confidence.

Begin with 10 repetitions per leg or perform the exercise for 30 seconds. Gradually increase the repetitions each week as appropriate.

Let me know in the comments below if you’re finding this useful :-)

DFD Regressions for Adults 65+

There are so many benefits of the Downward Facing Dog including the ability to get down and up off of the floor.

However, if you lack the strength and flexibility to get to the floor to do it then what do you do?

Try these DFD Regression to find your level and enable you to start where you’re at today - that way you can gradually progress to the floor 😊

Balance Training Over 50

Balance is one of the key skills we lose as we get older. So it’s important to push yourself daily in this area.

- Lateral Raise is strengthening your shoulders
- Single Leg Balance is working your balance muscles and nervous system
- Both are working your brain to do 2 things at the same time
- Your core and ankles are working hard to counterbalance the lifting of the weight (brilliant for falls prevention)

Give it a go and let me know how you get on 😊

Here’s a great move that’s going to work most of your body to help get you really strong and resilient, especially because it involves a coordinated, rotational movement.
It’s call the Side Kick Through
• Start on the floor on your hands and knees in the Box Press Up Position
• Tuck your feet under
• Push down and away through your hands rounding the upper back slightly
• Engage your core and glutes which will tuck your pelvis under slightly
• Rotate your knees to the side and load the opposite arm
• Scoop your leg in front of the other leg and extend it away from you
• Reverse the whole sequence pushing through the floor and using your shoulders to help rotate you back to the Box Position
Hope you find this useful 😊

There are a number of physical aspects that decline as we get older and keeping active is paramount for a long, independent, pain free life.

• Strength is vital to keep you upright and moving.
• Joint and bone resilience so it doesn’t hurt when doing activities like walking down stairs
• Balance to prevent a fall
• Mobility to get down and up from the floor (especially if you have grand kids)
• Heart and Lungs to keep your blood flowing and keep you active for longer

In this one session I will cover all of these elements.
The first session is FREE by typing in the coupon code FIRSTFREE – tap the APPLY button then PAY. You will then be sent an email to join the Zoom class

Do you know anyone who would benefit from this? If so then please feel free to share this with them.
