The UK government plans to remove high-sugar foods and reduce ultra-processed options from school menus to help improve children’s health.
If I’m honest, I haven’t been happy with the menus at my children’s school for the last few years. The options and portion sizes often meant my daughter came home hungry and really grumpy because she just wasn’t filled up.
That’s why I started sending packed lunches, so I know she’s getting something nutritious that will sustain her energy and keep her full throughout the school day. Although I know this isn’t an option for all parents, which is why for some children their school lunch may be the only proper meal they get all day — especially for families from disadvantaged backgrounds — so it really does need to be a good, nourishing one.
Let’s just hope the changes are guided by proper evidence-based nutrition, because improving school meals should be about supporting children’s energy, satiety and overall health, not just removing sugar.
