🚽 Why laboring on the toilet helps!!
Laboring on the toilet is often called the “dilation station” because it naturally encourages the body to relax and open — exactly what labor needs.

🌿 1. It relaxes the pelvic floor
Sitting on the toilet automatically cues your body to release and soften the pelvic floor — something we’ve been conditioned to do our entire lives. A relaxed pelvic floor helps the baby descend and reduces tension that can slow labor.

🧘‍♀️ 2. It puts you in a supported squat
The toilet creates a supported squat position, which can open the pelvis by up to 30%, giving the baby more room to engage and move downward.

🔄 3. It can help labor progress
Because the body is relaxed and the pelvis is open, contractions often become more effective. This is why many doulas and midwives see dilation pick up when someone sits on the toilet.

🕯️ 4. The bathroom feels private and safe
The bathroom is naturally a quiet, enclosed space — which boosts oxytocin, the hormone that drives labor. Feeling unobserved and safe helps labor hormones flow more freely.

💺 5. It’s a familiar place to “let go”
We associate the toilet with releasing tension. That psychological cue can help the cervix soften and open more easily.

It can’t be said often enough.

Your birth decisions and experiences are nobody's business but yours.

You have the right to make the decisions that are right for you and your baby.

No matter whether that's to do with where you give birth, who you have with you or what you want going on around that.

We need to ensure that ALL birth decisions are respected and that no-one is hassled, groomed, shamed, coerced or bullied about pregnancy and birth decisions.

Before OR afterwards.

Lots of information to help you decide at https://www.sarawickham.com

💗 A key part of a Love Your Birth Hypnobirthing course is understanding the options available to you and learning how to ask the right questions in order to make the best decision for you circumstances
💗 Before making any decisions, you should carefully consider all the following
💗 B- Benefits - what are the benefits of doing what has been proposed?
💗 R- Risks - what are the risks?
💗 A - Alternatives - there are always options - find out what they are
💗 I - Instinct, this is really important, you will be able to tell a lot by how you feel when something is suggested to you - go with what your gut tells you
💗 N - Nothing, ask what would happen if you did nothing or left it an hour then looked at your options again
💗 S - Smile, smiling produces oxytocin, the hormone of love and this is very beneficial in labour
💗 Being informed and part of the decision making process is key to having an empowered birth experience.
Do your research and discuss with your partner what you would and would not do in scenarios that may arise throughout pregnancy and labour so that you are both on the same page
💗 If you want to know more about how to take control and be prepared for the birth of your baby then get in touch

We know that it is better to allow a baby time to regulate its own blood volume and take the blood that it needs from the placenta after birth.

Early cord clamping can lead to increased rates of anaemia and decreased neurological (brain) development.

It is crucial that a baby is allowed to complete their own transition to optimal condition outside the uterus without any interference from cord clamping.

But not all babies are equal and some will need more time than others.

Each baby’s transition from intrauterine life to extrauterine life is a very individual process.

For this reason, it is not always helpful to use arbitrary time limits to determine how long to wait before clamping and cutting the cord.

Unless there is a problem (such as a tear in the cord or the mother is bleeding heavily), it may be better to watch the condition of the baby than to use arbitrary time limits.

People may find it helpful to use the phrase “wait for white” to describe how the cord looks white and floppy once the transition is complete and the baby has adjusted to life outside the womb.

This post has been created by Amanda Burleigh and Sara Wickham
