When forming any kind of relationship — whether friendships, acquaintanceships, or life partnerships — we should choose people who are equally capable of giving to us as they are of receiving from us. This exchange should be mutual and not flow in only one direction. Therefore, we should not give our energy to people who absorb it like an empty well.

Sometimes we struggle with finding and maintaining good relationships because many of us, expect validation of ourselves through the words of others. Additionally, often in an attempt to heal our own traumas and fulfill our own needs, we try to help others, who either do not appreciate it, do not understand it, or perhaps our help is not truly necessary for them in the form we imagine.
