Our first post of 2024! We've been a bit quiet lately, but it's for a good reason. Ending 2023 on a high note, we brought advanced trauma-informed training to the incredible primary care professionals in Northern Ireland, and are so pleased it was a success. Always learning, always evolving, our mission remains strong: supporting individuals facing adversity through education and community.

This year we hope to share more of our workplace training opportunities, an upcoming programme collaboration, as well as some more chats from Holly, and whether your new year brings with it the same difficult challenges you face daily, or whether you hve began your journey to giving yourself the support you need, remember we all move at our own pace and we can get there quicker with the support of others 🌱

Everything that has been explored this week- expectations, coping mechanisms, relationships, and self-image show how many things can all act as short term happiness to block out the real issue.

We would like to thank Eoin for his takeover this week and hope it helped spark some thoughts and conversations around men’s mental well-being!

Have you been keeping up with Eoin’s takeover this week? He’s back today with his views on social media and it’s impact on men's mental health.

''We all know that social media has its advantages and disadvantages. It continues to shape our perspective in the world. However it is important to be social media aware also. An over use of social media and certain apps and websites can lead to an unregulated dopamine release. This leads to a lack of less enjoyment of tasks, lack of motivation and poor concentration.

Social media also places extremely unrealistic expectations on men. Social media figures place an expectation on men that they should be extremely successful, financially secure and in peak physical condition. While this is a goal that men can have it is important for men to know that this is an unrealistic portrayal of “making it”. This exposure to these types of social media figures, can places a feeling of failure in men if they achieve anything less.''

Today Eoin is looking at the importantce of relationships when it comes to men's mental well- being. Lonliness, isolation, overwhelm are all feelings many men feel but cannot always express.

''Some young men struggle as to what a partner wants in a romantic relationship causing overwhlem and confusion and friendships may also have toxic influences such as drugs and alcohol misuse, or other means of reckless behaviours causing confusion, mistrust and isolation. ''

Peer support is important for every single person, it is something we can all benefit from and if you feel like you are in need of it please reach out for support to a friend, an organisation like ourselves, or someone you can trust 🌱

Today Eoin's exploring associated with mental well-being from a male perspective.

''While alcohol is a very effective coping mechanism short term, long term heavy alcohol use is always destructive. The physical impacts of long term alcohol use are extensive ranging from a stroke, to dementia, even to infertility. While anyone who has ever had a hangover can attest to the mental health impacts. Alcohol is a factor in 97% of public order offences in the Republic of Ireland and 1 in 11 of the Irish adult population said that they or a family member had been assaulted by someone under the influence of alcohol.

Some young men struggle as to what a partner wants in a romantic relationship causing overwhlem they rarely can express. Friendships may also have toxic influences such as drugs and alcohol misuse, or other means of reckless behaviours causing confusion, mistrust and isolation.

It's important to become aware of these coping mechanisms if we find ourselves overly relaying on them to the point of distress, and reaching out for support when it is needed. ''
