Your Monkey Mind is always trying to protect you π
I'm in Ashfield Boys with years 8 & 10 explaining how the Prefrontal Cortex (PFC) and Amygdala affect our moods:
π The PFC is the rational, calm & focused brain
π The Amygdala is the wild, emotional & survival brain
π
Your Amygdala is the part of the brain that we used to survive in the wild and it has no idea we are in 2024
π¨ When it detects a threat it gives you all the stress, anxiety and negative thoughts it can to keep you safe
π§ Here's the problem! It's very strong but not very smart so it doesn't know the difference between a cheeky email and your house burning down and will give you massive anxiety and fear over small or even imagined events.
*THE SOLUTION*
π Give your monkey brain a banana
Tell it how it's doing a great job and how you will do something nice if it helps you do what you need to do
π€ Put the monkey to sleep
Close your eyes, and imagine your chest and stomach are an elevator shaft and your breath is an elevator. When you breathe in the elevator goes down and when you breathe out the elevator goes up again
πͺ Exercise the monkey
Do something that gets your heart rate really high quickly. Studies show the nervous system relaxes after an intense period of physical exertion
