Hey there! 👋🏼 I’m James, head physio at Trifecta Physiotherapy & Training

Originally from Comber, but living in East Belfast with my partner in life and business and our dog Spencer

This year I turn 30 which apparently means I’m an adult now? Doesn’t really feel like it though lol

I LOVE training and completely geek out on all aspects of it - especially all things strength 💪🏼

Outside the gym I enjoy whipping about on my motorbike, I love spending time outdoors and in the sea 🌊

My professional journey officially began with a BSc in Physiotherapy from Ulster University back in 2017 but my passion for fitness and wellbeing started long before that (remember those 12 minute ab workouts on YouTube - smashed those flat out when I was 13 😂)

Fast forward to today, and I’ve spent the past 7 years honing my craft in the private sector, and dabbling in personal training for the past 9 years. From Olympic weightlifting to powerlifting, fitness has always been a consistent feature in my life.

In February, my partner and I launched our new clinic on Woodstock Road, and we’re thrilled with it and excited to watch this space grow and evolve.

At Trifecta, we’re all about empowering you to move better, feel better, and perform better. Whether you’re recovering from an injury or simply looking to optimise your fitness, we’ve got you covered.

If you’re ready to say goodbye to those nagging aches and pains and hello to a stronger, healthier you, shoot us a message.

We can’t wait to meet you and help you crush your goals! 💪🏼

Simple Tips for Reducing Pain - Load Management

Stop aggravating activities: Listen to your body!

If a particular movement or exercise worsens your pain, it’s crucial to take a break from it.

If you can’t run due to pain try cardiovascular activities that are less impact, like the cross trainer or bike 🚲

Reduce intensity: Modify your activities to lower the intensity level.

This could mean using lighter weights, decreasing resistance, or running slower.

Decrease volume: Don’t overdo it!

Cut back on the duration or frequency of your activities, whether it’s less exercises, reducing number of working sets or running shorter distances

Remember, consistency is key!

Find alternative exercises that don’t exacerbate pain and keep moving to maintain your overall fitness and well-being.

Your body will thank you for it! 💪

Holistic Ways to Reduce Pain and Improve Performance!

Pain can be a barrier, but with a holistic approach, you can conquer it and boost your performance! 💪

Here are some key factors to consider:

Sleep 💤
Quality sleep is your body's natural recovery mechanism.

Prioritize 7-9 hours of restful sleep to reduce pain and optimise performance. 😴

Manage Stress 🧘‍♀️
Stress can exacerbate pain.

Incorporate relaxation techniques like meditation and deep breathing into your routine to keep stress in check. 🧘‍♂️

Nutrition 🍏
Fuel your body with nutrient-dense foods.

Antioxidants and anti-inflammatory foods can help reduce pain and aid recovery. 🥦🍓

And don’t forget to stay hydrated! 💦

Manage Load 🏋️‍♂️
Find your sweet spot when it comes to exercise.

Avoid overtraining, and give your body time to recover between workouts. 🏃‍♀️🚴‍♂️

5. Move Well 🤸‍♂️
Slow and controlled nasal breathing is a great place to start here - the more relaxed the better!

If you have any movement limitations try relaxing into positions and improving mobility that you can control.

Remember, it's all about balance and listening to your body.

What holistic practices have you found effective?

PEACE ✌️& LOVE 💛

This is the latest in managing an acute injury!

Protect - avoid activities and movements that increase pain in the first few days post-injury❤️‍🩹

Elevate - elevate the injured limb higher than the heart as often as possible⬆️

Avoid Anti-inflammatories - these reduce tissue healing & AVOID ICE (unless you need pain relief to numb the area)❌

Compress - use elastic bandage or tubing/taping to reduce swelling.🤕

Educate - your body knows best, avoid unnecessary passive treatments & medical investigations. Nature knows best, let it play its role.🤓

&

Load - let pain guide your gradual return to activities (typically no greater than a 3/10VAS)🧘🏼‍♂️

Optimism - condition your brain for optimal recovery by being positive and confident.🧠

Vascularisation - choose pain-free cardiovascular activities to increase blood flow to the repairing tissues. (Saunas have good potential here)🧖🏻‍♀️

Exercise - Restore mobility, stability, strength, capacity & proprioception by adopting an active approach to recovery🏋🏻

Here’s my suggestions for when it comes to easing yourself back into exercising!

▪️Keep it pain-free (slight discomfort is ok)
▪️Work on improving your proprioception and motor control before loading the movement up heavier!
▪️Slow and steady wins the race

If you have an injury and want to give yourself the greatest advantage of returning to sport, or returning to daily activities pain-free then fire me a DM and I will help you reach your goals🔥
