We were delighted to welcome Tony Martin to our Belfast HQ recently as he reached an incredible milestone – his 300th platelets donation.

Tony, from Jordonstown, first started donating blood back in 1979 while working in the shipyard. What began as a couple hours off work quickly turned into a lifelong habit of helping others.

In November 2006, Tony took his generosity a step further and began donating platelets. Thanks to Tony’s platelet donations, he has helped save as many as 600 lives.

Tony’s story became even more personal when his 16-month-old grandson needed blood and platelet transfusions after being diagnosed with leukaemia. Thankfully, two years ago, his grandson went into remission. Tony says he likes to think that maybe some of his 300 platelets donations helped his grandson along the way, and he is incredibly thankful to all donors.

Tony also enjoys every visit to Belfast, especially catching up with the NIBTS staff, who he says always make him feel welcome.

Tony would encourage anything thinking about donating to give it a go. His message is simple and powerful: β€œThink about if you were in the situation where you needed blood – you would like to think someone would help you.”

Thank you, Tony, for your outstanding kindness. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Our Story

In Northern Ireland three people are transfused every hour and over 800 units of red blood cells are used each week. Donation is simple and usually takes less than an hour yet only 6% of the eligible population donates.
