This Mother's Day we celebrate the strength of mums like Nicola. ๐Ÿ’–

Nicola's daughter Lauren needed platelets every 10 days and blood transfusions every 18-21 days to stay alive!

To give back, Nicola organised a blood donation session with her workplace, to help raise awareness and keep our hosptials stocked.

Your donation could give families like Nicola's & Lauren's the chance to keep fighting for their future.

๐Ÿฉธ Give blood or help raise awareness today. Visit www.NIBTS.org

๐Ÿงช Healthcare Science Week (9โ€“15 March) ๐Ÿฉธ

Behind every blood transfusion is a team of skilled scientists working in the lab to make it possible.

Meet Billie, a Biomedical Scientist in Hospital Services at the Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service.

Billie and her colleagues process urgent orders for blood components for hospitals and pharmacies across Northern Ireland, supporting people in surgery, childbirth, trauma care, cancer treatment and even newborn babies.

"There are a lot of tasks I carry out daily that collectively help save lives. We work carefully and quickly to get blood to patients as soon as possible while maintaining the highest quality."

For Billie, the best part of the role is always learning.

"I genuinely enjoy my job. I get to learn so much and use that knowledge every day while knowing the work we do helps save lives."

Healthcare scientists play a vital role behind the scenes in patient care and their work makes a real difference every day.

Did you know? ๐Ÿค”

Since last International Womenโ€™s Day, 13,946 women have donated blood with us. That means up to 41,838 lives could have been saved. ๐Ÿฉธ๐Ÿ’–

๐Ÿ‘‰ Thatโ€™s thousands of families helped, thousands of people supported, and thousands of reasons to say thank you.

Today we celebrate every woman who donates, encourages others, and every member of our amazing staff who make lifesaving possible. ๐Ÿ’•

Our Story

In Northern Ireland three people are transfused every hour and over 800 units of red blood cells are used each week. Donation is simple and usually takes less than an hour yet only 6% of the eligible population donates.
