We are so proud of some of our amazing supporters who have been recognised in awards over the last few days. 🏆🙌

Mark Hanna won Charity Champion at the Belfast Telegraph Spirit of Northern Ireland awards on Friday evening. 🎉 This is so well deserved for the incredible fundraising and championing of Marie Curie that Mark has done since his father in law was cared for in the Belfast hospice 17 years ago. 💛

Mark also won a Special Recognition Award at the Chartered Institute of Fundraising Northern Ireland for everything he has done for Marie Curie.

Congratulations too to Omagh Harriers who were also recognised at the Chartered Institute of Fundraising Northern Ireland Awards for their partnership with Omagh Friends of Marie Curie forged as the official charity partner of the SPAR Omagh Half Marathon 2024. 🙌

Huge congratulations to Mark and Omagh Harriers and thank you for all your amazing support 💛

Today our Legacy Lead, Deborah McWhirter, hosted sixty of our local supporters at The Secret Garden at Dundonald Nurseries for an informative event about the importance of legacies to Marie Curie 🌼

Guests enjoyed afternoon tea, followed by talks on the work of Marie Curie across Northern Ireland and how a gift in your Will can support this. We also enjoyed a gardening demonstration from the brilliant Steve at Dundonald Nurseries 🤩

Thank you to everyone who came to the event and to the staff at The Secret Garden at Dundonald Nurseries for all their help today 💛

If you’re interested in leaving a gift to Marie Curie or our Free Will Service, get in touch with Deborah via email deborah.mcwhirter@mariecurie.org.uk

We are absolutely devastated that we have had to take the difficult decision to cancel today’s Beat the Trails at the Mournes event. We apologise for the disappointment this has caused.

We had been closely monitoring the weather forecast for the weekend and had made alterations to the trail to accommodate adverse weather. However, this morning when we arrived at site, our health and safety partners advised that due to an upgrade of the weather forecast to severe for heavy rain and lightning and potential flooding on the route, we had to cancel the event.

We exhausted all options including a revised shorter route but were advised against this from a risk to participant safety. Our main priority will always be the safety of our participants, volunteers and staff, and we will be in touch directly with everyone affected. We would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding this morning 💛💛💛

Recently, we visited Ryan's Cookie Box aka no. 1 Baker Boy to thank them for supporting Marie Curie over the last 10 years.

Ryan and his family have set up a not-for-profit stall at the end of their drive which is filled with delicious homemade cookies, brownies and other yummy treats. The box is very popular and the family donate any profits made to different charities. They have very kindly chosen to support Marie Curie for around 6 weeks each year for the last 10 years, this year raising an amazing £1050 🤩

Hazel, Ryan's Mum, said: “Marie Curie is a charity close to our family’s hearts and I’m so glad we could support the charity again this year with the proceeds from the cookie box.”

We are so grateful Ryan's Cookie Box for your support and the cookies are amazing! 💛

You may have spotted a lovely story in the local news about our volunteer Complementary Therapist, Tracy Morrow, who is based at the Marie Curie Hospice in Belfast.

Tracy said: “I understand how the earth shakes beneath your feet when a loved one receives a terminal diagnosis. You so wish you could have a different outcome, and you would do anything you could to make what they are going through even a little bit easier to cope with.”

Tracy delivers reflexology, massage and aromatherapy treatments to those receiving palliative and end of life care. Tracy has been volunteering at the hospice for almost 11 years now and sadly, seven months ago she lost her mum, Sylvia, who received Marie Curie Outpatient care and Hospice Care at Home.

She added “It’s a privilege for me to provide comfort to someone and, particularly if they are having a really difficult time, to be able to bring them a bit of peace and calm. The ‘thank you’s’ I get from individuals and their families touch my heart, and ultimately that’s what keeps me coming back to the hospice each week. I always get so much more out of volunteering than I give.”

This Volunteers' Week we would like to give a big shout out to all our volunteers who contribute to the work of Marie Curie in many different ways. We hope you know how much we appreciate your support - we couldn't do what we do without you!! 💛🤩

We had the pleasure of welcoming some of our volunteers to the hospice this week as a thank you. It was a lovely afternoon to bring volunteers together and remind them how grateful we are for their support. With a special mention to Helen Laird, Bereavement Support Volunteer, who marked her 30 years of service as a Marie Curie volunteer. ⭐

👏 Once again, thank you to all our volunteers, you are amazing!!👏

Thank you to Ruth and Dermot who provided an incredibly special treat for the hospice patients, staff and visitors earlier this week with some beautiful music which flowed the whole way through the building. 🎼🎻

Ruth also recently ran the Belfast marathon with Trevor Bloxsom for Marie Curie and the Ulster Youth Orchestra, in memory of her friend Brian Connor, a well known pianist, producer, arranger and composer, who was cared for in the hospice at the end of last year. 💛

Ruth said ‘It was a privilege to play in the hospice. I am incredibly grateful for the love and care Brian was shown by the staff here at the Marie Curie. It is a very special place with staff who have hearts of gold, and so to be able to run in Brian’s memory to raise funds for the very important work they do supporting people at such a critical time in their lives has been an honour.” 💛

Thank you Ruth and Dermot for this wonderful visit to the hospice and all your support of Marie Curie. 🥰

Good luck ☘ to Matty who is taking on the challenge of a lifetime this Sunday 1st June in the Hamburg Ironman race 💪in support of Marie Curie.🏃🏊‍♂️🚴‍♂️

Matty, has been planning and training towards this incredible race for several years and has decided to fundraise for Marie Curie because of the care his Granda, Neil, received in the Belfast hospice 20 years ago. 💛

At just 5 years old, Matty remembers visiting his Granda at the Marie Curie hospice, he said, “As such a young child I didn’t fully understand the seriousness of Granda’s illness, but I do really remember how good and kind the staff were to me and my family, especially when Granda passed away. It is a memory that has stayed with me all my life and so when I decided to take on the Ironman, I always knew I wanted to do it in support of Marie Curie.” 💛

We’re all behind you Matty and good luck! ☘👊

Today is International Nurses Day and we are celebrating all the wonderful nurses and health care assistants who work for Marie Curie 🙌

Debbie is a Nurse Manager in our Belfast Hospice and has been working at Marie Curie for 9 years. She said it is a great privilege to work here as a Nurse, caring for people in their final days.

Debbie said ‘I’ve learnt so much working at Marie Curie, and it is really humbling to be supporting people at the most vulnerable time in life. The strength that people have in difficult times is amazing and something that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

‘The patients here have taught me so much and helped to change my perspective on life. I feel it has changed me as a person working here to really appreciate and make the most of everyday.’ 💛

Thank you to all our Marie Curie Nurses and to all the team supporting this vital work 💛
