Thank you, Karen.

After nearly 10 years with Angel Eyes NI, we are saying a warm goodbye to Karen Wilson, who is moving on to pastures new.

When Karen joined us in February 2016, Angel Eyes NI was a very different organisation – a team of two, an administrator and our CEO, Sara. From day one, Karen rolled up her sleeves and set about building something better for children and young people with vision impairment across Northern Ireland.

Karen quickly upskilled in assistive technology, adapted resources, and developed and extensive knowledge in the statementing process, from annual reviews through to statutory assessments. She went on to lead the collaboration with Ulster University to develop the Level 4 accredited Classroom Assistant training – the first of its kind in the UK or ROI, specifically designed for assistants supporting children with vision impairment.

During COVID-19, Karen authored two pivotal reports examining the impact of the pandemic on children with vision impairment and the widening inequalities they faced.

Karen also played a central role in developing and delivering Angel Eyes NI’s Virtual Reality Sight Loss Simulator training, helping parents and professionals better understand children’s eye conditions and the impact of vision impairment on learning, alongside practical strategies to make learning and daily life more accessible.

She led on two Shared Island reports exploring support for children with vision impairment across Ireland and headed up major collaborative projects including the EqualEyes project with the Children’s Law Centre.

Above all, Karen was a hugely popular and hugely valued member of our team, and very much loved by the families she supported. Her impact on Angel Eyes NI and on the lives of children and young people with vision impairment will be felt for many years to come.

We want to reassure families that our Education Advocacy service continues as normal. Sarah Mathison, our Education Advocate, is supporting families with education-related matters and remains available to provide guidance, advocacy and practical support.

Thank you, Karen, for everything.
We wish you every success in what comes next.

Saturday Club returned in full swing!!
Laughter echoed through the hall as families got creative with arts and crafts and there was lots of singing and dancing.
A special thank you to Strand Presbyterian Community Space for accommodating us on such short notice.

We were delighted to welcome Charlie from Thomas Pocklington Trust to our offices recently to spend time with our Services Assistant Intern, Nathan, as part of the Get Set Progress internship programme.

Charlie met the team and heard first-hand about the extent of the work we do at Angel Eyes NI, and the many ways Nathan is already supporting our services across the organisation. Having Nathan with us over the past four months, as part of a nine-month programme, has been incredibly valuable, his skills, insight and enthusiasm are making a real difference, and we’re excited to see how he continues to grow in the months ahead.

As the first organisation in Northern Ireland to take part in the Get Set Progress internship programme, we couldn’t recommend it highly enough. It’s been a brilliant opportunity not just for Nathan, but for us as an organisation too.

Thank you, Charlie, for taking the time to visit, for the thoughtful conversations, and for your continued support. We’re proud to be part of a programme that opens up meaningful employment pathways and builds confidence, skills and ambition.

Hi! I’m Nathan, I am 23 years old and I joined the Angel Eyes NI team in October.

I have lived with VI since birth. Specifically I have short sightedness and nystagmus (which means my eyes shake) so I see things further away from me as blurry and frequently experience fatigue and eye strain as my eyes and brain work harder to correct my vision. I wear glasses which as well as aiding my sight also darken down in bright light to help reduce glare.

Growing up, particularly during the latter half of secondary school and university I felt a lot of anxiety and worries about the future. What job should I do, what job could I do? Would there be accommodations made for my needs? Of course everyone is worried about their first job, but when you're like me and have needed support in one way or another throughout school the world of work can seem particularly scary. My main concern was less around whether I could work, but rather would my colleagues and employer have that understanding that sometimes I might have to take a little bit longer doing something or have to do it a slightly different way.

Thankfully after a year of applying for every entry level job I could find and volunteering with RNIB I found out Angel Eyes was offering a 9 month internship with Thomas Pocklington Trust. I applied and got the job, but that was only the start! So if you are like me a young person who is anxious about going into the big world of work, please check this space as I share my experience of working in this amazing organisation!

Children in Northern Ireland (CiNI) and Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People are setting up a Parent Advisory Group and are inviting parents and carers to share their experiences and help shape the Commissioner’s work for children, young people and families.

They're looking for parents and carers from all backgrounds to share their lived experiences, highlight the challenges families face, and ensure parents’ voices are heard.

No previous experience needed — just your perspective as a parent or carer.
Involvement includes around 4 flexible meetings per year, with support to make participation accessible.

Interested? Check out the link https://lght.ly/16kjgpg or email ppinbox@ci-ni.org.uk

Your voice could help shape work affecting families across Northern Ireland.

Have your say! 📢

Vision Sports Ireland , in collaboration with ourselves, RNIB Northern Ireland and Disability Sport NI , is running two important surveys to better understand the experiences of people with vision impairments in physical activity and sport across Ulster.

We want to hear directly from children and adults who are blind or partially sighted so future opportunities, supports, and programmes can be shaped by real experiences.

Free Online Programme for Students Preparing for Next Steps

Are you, or do you know someone, who is getting ready for their next steps after school or college?

Our friends at Thomas Polkington Trust are offering a free, interactive online programme for students preparing for further or higher education.

The sessions begin in late January and are designed to help students feel confident, informed, and ready for what comes next.
Starting a new course can feel daunting, particularly with a vision impairment. STEP helps students feel more confident, prepared and connected. Sessions are supportive, relaxed and interactive, giving students the chance to ask questions, connect with peers and build practical skills. Students can attend the full series or choose individual sessions.

STEP into Further Education starts on Wednesday 28th January and STEP into Higher Education on Thursday 29th January.

For more information and how students can register, please visit: https://lght.ly/8166c9l
