Ever wondered what our name means? 🧘

In Sanskrit (ancient classical language of India), maitri (मैत्री) means loving-kindness, benevolence, friendliness, amity, or goodwill.

It is a foundational concept in Buddhist philosophy, particularly one of the four Brahmaviharas (sublime states), and can be translated as unconditional friendship or active goodwill towards oneself and others. It is more than just a feeling, involving a cultivated practice of treating others with warmth, empathy, and respect.

This concept rooted in ancient scriptures and languages is one of the many ethical values of respect and love that we want to transmit at the studio, as teachers but also as human beings 🫶

Another great contribution to Positive Aging month from our teacher Tom Magill. As he shares with us, he's into his 70th year. How does that feel? And what can he share from his experience? Read on...

It’s never too late and you’re never too old.

At 48 I was having back pain. A chiropractor told me whilst on his table: you have two ages, your calendar age and your biological age, which is determined by the flexibility of your spine. How can I make my spine more flexible, I asked? Try a yoga class. I ignored him and went to the pub. Around that time I asked a friend to recommend some life insurance. He suggested a yoga class. This wasn’t a coincidence. Yoga, seriously? I was sceptical, but I went along anyway. I was stiff, aching, envious and competitive – big mistake – don’t compete with the bendy girls in Lycra… "What other people are doing on their mat is none of your business, work on yourself" I took the teacher’s advice and stuck at yoga despite the challenges. That was 21 years ago. Last year I completed my yoga teacher training.

People ask me what’s the most useful thing you’ve got from yoga? I now make better decisions. One of the benefits of aging is learning how to respond instead of simply reacting. I’ve discovered that choosing my response is where my true power resides. This knowledge is something I can bring to my practice and teaching.

I teach yoga between six and seven on Friday evenings at Maitri for blokes who don’t do yoga. Previously I’d be perched on a high barstool at that time. I’ve learned that it’s never too late and you’re never too old. I’ll be 70 next year. I feel great. I still think I’m 45. People sometimes ask me for advice: hydrate, eat less, move more, sleep well, breathe deeply and learn how to synchronise your movement and breath. Start with 5 minutes of yoga a day – consistency beats intensity. If in doubt, remember:

“You are not too old
and it is not too late
to dive into your increasing depths
where life calmly gives out
its own secret.” (Rilke)

Autumn and Winter can be a time to slow down with the seasons and Yin Yoga can help you do that exactly! 🫶

Derived from Daoist and Chinese Yoga and philosophy, Yin Yoga is a slow paced, passive practice where poses are held for a few minutes.

A Yin Yoga practice focuses on relaxation and stillness to achieve a deeper stretch into the connective tissues in the body and where participants are welcomed to enter a meditative state of being. It encourages us to connect deeply with our bodies and cultivate internal awareness in stillness. Yin poses are all floor based and props are used to help stabilise body and mind.

We are lucky to have a few Yin offerings this winter with :

- Lucie offering monthly Yin Yoga classes (16th October, 20th November, 18th December), 7.30-8.30pm, book with or head to her page on Maitri website!

- Xenia returning to offer a mini Yin Yoga for relaxation retreat on the 26th of October, 2-4pm. Head over to her page on Maitri website for info and booking!

- Grace Tempany coming back to Maitri in June 2026 to offer a weekend of Functional Yin Foundations, 3 days of immersion into Yin! Read more and book on our website 🌙

In many yoga studios you'll find props like blocks and bricks, nowadays so global but originally developed and used in the Iyengar method.

In this feature student Anne talks about how use of props (with assistance of Iyengar yoga teachers at Maitri Studio) has helped her find more freedom and reduce pain in her knees, amongst other benefits.

Of course we're delighted that Anne has found yoga so beneficial, and as teachers we're ever grateful to our Iyengar yoga lineage and community for our own ongoing learning and knowledge to share with students.

A recent BBC article 'How to Future Proof Your Knees' talks about the importance of working all the muscles around the joint, and that is exactly what we're doing.

Read here : https://www.bbc.co.uk/future/article/20250926-how-to-futureproof-your-knees

As well as of course helping the practitioner find the psychological benefits with help with self-awareness, consistent practice, and learning to be patient with oneself and let go of the fear around pain.

We love to hear your stories and how you see Maitri! 💕

Thank you to June Wilkinson who took time to write her feelings of appreciation down and explain why the classes she attends at Maitri are so important to hear.

Physical benefits, inclusivity and community are all part of what our mission is at the studio. Iyengar Yoga can be incredibly beneficial to people developing aches and pains as they are aging. And our great Iyengar teachers are here to make coming to class the smoothest and most welcoming experience you can have.

If you would like to share your story to be published please email info@maitristudio.net or DM us here! It doesn't have to be long, we just love to hear your stories 🫶
