Ishvara Pranidana is the last of our niyamas. It translates to surrendering to a higher being, but how does that come into play in our practice and our daily life? Maybe you have had a moment in savasana where you felt alive, connected and also entirely at peace. Maybe it's where you let go of the striving in a yoga practice and truly embrace being in the moment with all the challenges. That can go for off the mat as well. Perhaps you have felt the moment where you just had to pause and allow life to take it's course, it might not be how you would have made it but there can be some peace in sitting with it as it is.

This is a question I get a lot! Let your yoga be yoga. Let your strength practice be your strength practice. You can’t efficiently build strength by just doing yoga with a small dumbbell. Mobility maybe, endurance maybe, but stronger bones and more muscle mass, not so much!

Santosha translates to contentment. It's also a word you might recognise from the yoga studio in Lisburn! For me santosha is about finding gratitude and peace in where I am at and what I have. It is easy for life to feel like a constant striving for more, but taking a pause to really enjoy the moment can really bring you joy.

Saucha translates to cleanliness and is one of the niyamas. I think of saucha being behind why we take off our shoes before we come into the yoga studio, to help us keep the place we practice clean. If you are practicing at home you might notice how distracting it can be to be noticing the dust bunnies when you lay down on the floor! So it isn't just about being clean, but about letting us feel relaxed because we aren't distracted. This also manifests in how I will clean up the kitchen before I start to cook or tidy my desk before I sit down to work.

Abhyasa community member Sandi sent me this today- Today, i am moving 20 42kg flag stones from the driveway to the very bottom of the garden. Yes, i am using a trolley, but i am still pushing and pulling 42+ kg 20 times, having to go up ramps to various levels of our garden to reach the bottom. 2 years ago, i wouldn’t have even continplated this kind of task! So i am immensely grateful to the time and effort you put into our strength training classes and back rebuild classes. ☺️ The moral of the story is don’t give up on yourself and keep at it and who knows where you will be! Well done Sandi! ❤️

Niyama translates to observances. Where the yamas are things we don't do, the niyamas are things that we do. There are five niyamas in the yoga sutras and we have covered two of them already, svadyaya (self study) and tapas (discipline). You could think of them like healthy habits.

45 mins of my training this morning in 45 seconds. This is what I would call my core and back day. What I mean as core is all the parts that support my spine, not just abdominal muscles. Not pictured is the mulitple sets and the dance breaks in between!

Why is practicing meditation in a group so different? Orla shares here why it can be so helpful. It isn't too late to join the autumn term of her course!

Aparigraha, is the last of the yamas, or ethical restraints of yoga. It translates into non greed or non attachment. In many ways it overlaps with asteya or non stealing. This can be as simple as only taking what we need. Or maybe it becomes more about not being too attached to the outcome of something. When we cling to the idea of having something or how something might be it can really unsettle the mind. Think about the last time you starting craving chocolate when there was none in the house. How easy was it to fixate on the chocolate? So aparigraha, as with all the yamas, are a practice. Of noticing what catches us and then seeing if we can make another choice.

Just some thoughts about how yoga is more than just the shapes we make on the mat. Really this is just a fraction of what we could talk about in terms of what this practice can bring to our lives.
