The 2nd new PhD to join us is Aidan Kilmartin from Belfast.

Aidan recently graduated with an MSci in Biochemistry from Queen's University Belfast and has now joined the LLNI Blood Cancer Group to begin his PhD, which will focus on exploring the role of mRNA and protein quality control mechanisms in driving acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) progression and therapeutic resistance.

His research aims to uncover new vulnerabilities in AML cells to support the development of more effective treatment strategies and improve outcomes for patients.

Outside of the lab, Aidan enjoys swimming, reading, and camping, especially making the most of the outdoors.

We’re thrilled to welcome Aidan to the team and look forward to his contributions to LLNI’s research community.

Sunday 12th October saw our last Europa Abseil for 2025 and thankfully we had a lovely dry day for it.

Our intrepid fundraisers enjoyed stunning views of Belfast from the top of the iconic Europa Hotel before making their way down to ground level. Top marks go to Michael who was one of the fastest we've ever seen - a real blink and you'd miss him moment!

Thank you to everyone who took part in an abseil this year and helped us to raise much needed funds and awareness for LLNI.

A huge thank you to Lissummon GFC for their very generous donation of Β£5000 to Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI.

The money was donated in memory of their late treasurer Jacqueline Rafferty who sadly passed away in 2023.

LLNI Chair Richard Buchanan was invited to receive the cheque from members of the club committee.

September saw us welcome some new PhD students to the Johnston Cancer Research Centre who will be funded throughout their course by Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI.

Ciara Cunningham, from Atticall, Co. Down, graduated with a BSc in Biomedical Science from QUB in 2024 and recently completed her MSc in Cancer Medicine.

She now joins the LLNI Blood Cancer Group as she works on her PhD in Lymphoma Research. Her PhD project will focus on enhancing therapeutic response in Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) through investigating the role of metabolic regulators. This aims to identify new ways to improve how patients respond to treatment and lead to better outcomes for those affected by DLBCL.

When she's not working on her research Ciara enjoys reading, Pilates and is a keen walker, particularly enjoying walks in the beautiful Mournes. We're sure she'll be a familiar face at our LLNI sponsored walks!

Welcome to the team Ciara!

Minnie McGookin recently celebrated her 90th Birthday and we were delighted when she came to visit us in the Johnston Cancer Research Centre.

Minnie sadly lost her husband to blood cancer in 1994 so rather than birthday gifts she asked family and friends to make a donation to Leukae

Thanks to the amazing generosity of Minnie and everyone who donated she presented us with a cheque for Β£1050!

Thank you Minnie and many happy returns!
