Hawthorn.
Hawthorn (Crataegus oxycanthus) has long been considered the herb of choice for strengthening and protecting the cardiovascular system, particularly the heart. In fact, its use as a cardiac tonic dates as far back as first century Rome.
In the recent years, the Scientific evidence confirming Hawthorn's traditional use has increased. Hawthorn has been the subject of numerous of research studies, some of which include double-blind, placebo-controlled human clinical trials. The results from these studies suggest Hawthorn strengthens the heart muscle, and can increases exercise tolerance, and support a normal heart rhythm.
Hawthorn has been used as a supplement for angina pectoris, functional heart disease and the early manifestations of circulatory insufficiency, and as a heart tonic to regulate circulation.
Hawthorn is safe for long-term use and needs to be taken over a period of several months to achieve results.
The mechanism of action has not been elucidated, however, it is believed Hawthorn's biological activity is not due to a particular group of constituents, but the interaction of a number of compounds. Experimental and human research indicates these compounds work together to reinforce the heart's pumping capacity, support coronary blood flow, and provide antioxidant protection to the heart.
Motherwort.
Leonurus cardiaca is a perennial plant found in Central Europe, Central Asia and parts of the Himalayas. Leonurus cardiaca is a well-known sedative and nervine that is extremely beneficial to the circulatory system, as evidenced by its latin name Leonurus cardiaca. It is recommended for rapid or irregular heart beat caused by stress or anxiety.
Traditionally, Leonurus cardiaca is used as a heart tonic to strengthen the cardiovascular system, particularly the heart muscle (Myocardium). The beneficial effect of the Leonurus cardiaca has been shown to be a consequence of Leonurine, an alkaloid, which has been shown to reduce ventricular pressure and by increasing coronary (heart) blood flow.
In another study leonurine demonstrated concentration dependent, reduction of vascular tone. The proposed mechanism of action in this study was the inhibition of vascular smooth muscle tone through the inhibition of Ca2+ influx and the release of intracellular Ca2+. In a connecting study, Leonurus cardiaca demonstrated the ability to reduce essential blood pressure by 8-20 mmHg, alleviation of associated headaches and dizziness, was also reported.
Olive Leaf.
Olea europaea is used for its ability to reduce hypertension and its ability to increase blood supply to heart muscle tissue by causing a dilatory effect on coronary arteries.
The coronary vasodilatory effect and hypotensive (blood pressure reducing) properties of Olea europaea have been attributed to the presence of oleuropein (a polyphenolic iridoid glycoside). Oleuropein is metabolised in the body to calcium elenolate, which is responsible for the many pharmacological actions of the olive leaf. It is thought calcium elenolate increase levels of nitric oxide synthase, resulting in an increased level of nitric oxide, which acts locally to induce a vasodilatory effect on blood vessels, consequently reducing blood pressure.
