'twixt – a group exhibition by artists in multiple artforms.
Wednesday 14 January – Wednesday 25 February 2026.

The current exhibition, 'twixt', presents a cross section of our artist community with artwork dealing with diverse themes using diverse skill sets and materials.

One thing that unites all the artists in the exhibition is difficulty in sourcing finance and funding for artists, as explained by one of the twenty Deaf Disabled Artist Support Fund (DDASF) awardees in 2025, Jayne Cherry.

The DDASF fund will be renamed as 'Atypical Generation Fund' and will be opening for applications in February 2026. The fund will remain the same - just a fancy new name. To apply, check out our website or social media or call the Atypical Gallery to find out more.

The fund is supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

A pleasure working with you Beat Carnival

At Beat Carnival we are committed to improving accessibility in all aspects of our work. With that in mind, we recently took part in accessibility training with a specific focus on social media. We are implementing what we have learned including: adding image descriptions, using plain language and limiting our use of emojis.

If you have any suggestions on how we can improve or make our content more accessible, please get in touch.

Thanks to University of Atypical for Arts and Disability

CHOICE and Belfast City Council are hosting a free Arts Taster Day at The MAC in Belfast, offering a relaxed creative space for people living with long-term mental health challenges, and for anyone who may benefit from something gentle and low-pressure 🎨

The CHOICE Project is a community-based initiative focused on increasing social connection and improving access to community activities for people living with long-term mental health conditions.

It works through social prescribing, linking you with places and activities in your community – like leisure centres, education classes or training, art spaces of National Trust sites – that you may want to use but have for various reasons found difficult.

Taking place on Thursday, 5th February, the drop-in sessions invite people to explore expressive painting, circus skills and the grounding experience of working with clay, while finding out more about CHOICE. There’s no expectation to take part in everything and no prior experience is needed. You can arrive at any point during the session and stay for as little or as long as feels right.

Two sessions are available, running from 1.30-3:00pm and 3.00-4:30pm, with tea and coffee available throughout. All activities are optional, and the day is designed to move at a pace that feels comfortable.

If this sounds like something you, or someone you know, might find helpful, please feel free to share! Free tickets are available now:

Our Story

University of Atypical is a disabled-led arts charity, taking an empowerment based approach towards supporting disabled and deaf people’s involvement in the arts. The company specialises in developing and promoting the work of artists who are disabled and deaf and in reaching disabled and deaf audiences. Membership of the UofA is free to disabled/deaf individuals. University of Atypical’s lead funder is the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and additional core funding is provided by Belfast City Council. The company attracts project support from a range of other funders and makes earned income from ticket sales. Donations from individuals and from businesses are very welcome - all donations go back into our work with disabled and deaf artists and audiences. Working with all art forms and across all impairments, UofA delivers a year-round programme of exhibitions and events, including Bounce Arts Festival, which presents an exciting range of music, theatre, dance and visual arts by artists who are disabled /deaf, alongside family friendly activities. This year’s Bounce dates are 5-8 September. Atypical Gallery shows work by disabled and deaf artists on a year-round basis. It is on the Ground Floor of Cathedral Quarter Workspaces, at the Belfast Telegraph end of Royal Avenue (opposite the Mace shop/Central Library). University of Atypical manages the iDA grant scheme for disabled/deaf artists, with funds from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

Our Arts & Disability Equality Charter supports venues to be as accessible as possible for disabled/deaf audiences and artists.

Membership is free to disabled /deaf people and others can join for a small fee. Being a member shows us - and our funders - that you value our work. For a membership form please contact info@universityofatypical.org.
