A little glimpse of what a yoga class actually feels like.

People arrive quietly after a busy day.

Shoes come off. Mats are unrolled.

There’s usually a bit of chatting while everyone settles in… someone always says their shoulders feel tight or they’ve had a long week.

Then we begin to slow things down.

Breathing a little deeper.
Stretching out the places that have been holding tension.
Letting the nervous system soften.

By the end of the class the room feels different. Quieter somehow.

People roll up their mats, say goodnight, and step back out into the evening feeling just a little lighter than when they arrived.

If you’ve ever wondered what a yoga class is actually like, that’s a small glimpse.

And if you ever feel like joining us, there will always be a space on the mat.

What’s the one thing you hope to feel after a yoga class? Let me know 👇

To you,

To the people who came along to every class for months, and then disappeared - you were missed.
To those who came once and said, 'that was great I'll definitely be back,' then never booked again - yoga is about honesty.
To the studio owner who believed a lie over the truth - I deserved more after years of friendship and loyalty.
To those I called friends, who disappeared from class and my life after the pandemic - that's not What friendship is.
To the countless halls that were dirty, freezing and unfit for use - if someone is paying to hire your room, they shouldn't have to clean it beforehand.
To the people who asked 'who is she to do x y and z' - jealousy isn't part of yoga, so why are you still teaching.
To those who came to my classes and then stole my ideas - you're welcome.
To the 'friend' who walked away when I needed her most, after she had taken all the support I had to offer - my heart is big enough to forgive, but not to forget.
To the people who messaged, emailed and phoned me, I've spent so much time answering questions that can easily be found online - you had no intention of showing up to my class, but you stole time from me.

To the people who came along, who smiled at me when I wanted to cry, who kept me going when I wanted to give up, who made me want to do better and be better - I did all of this because I believed it would help.

And so 10 years ago today, I got a piece of paper saying I was a yoga teacher. Ten years of experience, or learning, of trying to be better each class I teach. Ten years of pushing through anxiety, pain, depression, grief - to deliver an amazing yoga experience for you all.

So thank you, to all of the above. Ive learned so much from you all, and I have genuinely had some of the best moments in my life.

One of the things people often say to me before their first yoga class is:

“I’m not flexible enough.”

Or sometimes:

“I’m worried I won’t be able to keep up.”

The truth is, yoga classes are full of people who feel exactly the same way.

Some people are completely new.
Some are coming back after a long break.
Some just want an hour to stretch, breathe, and switch off from the world for a while.

Yoga was never meant to be about being good at poses.

It’s about creating a little space for yourself… to move, to breathe, and to feel a bit more like yourself again.

So if you’ve been thinking about coming along to a class but haven’t quite gathered the courage yet, consider this your gentle reminder that you’d be very welcome.

You don’t need to be flexible.

You just need to show up.

I'll be waiting with a smile and a warm 'hello!'

It's

Today I'm grateful for Jackson, who is my 7 year old Shih Tzu.

He loves squeaky toys, walks in the park and cheese. He hates rain and baths!🛀

He reminds me to enjoy the small moments and to find something to be grateful for each day.

Are you also owned by a fur baby? Let me know their name and favourite things 👇 Let's celebrate the pets who make our lives a tiny bit more fun 🤩

Today is the Spring Equinox.

For a brief moment in the year, day and night sit in perfect balance before the days slowly begin to grow longer again.

Light and dark.
Activity and rest.
Yang and yin.

It’s always a lovely reminder that balance isn’t something we find once and keep forever. It’s something we keep returning to.

Over the past week I’ve been thinking a lot about that idea in my own practice… finding strength when it’s needed and softness when it’s not.

The change of season feels like a gentle invitation to begin again.

If anyone feels like welcoming the new season with some movement and stillness, we’ll be practising in the immersive room tomorrow morning.

However you spend the equinox, I hope you find a moment of balance somewhere in the day.

Not every yoga pose needs strength.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause, fold down, and rest for a moment.

With the Spring Equinox approaching this week, the days and nights come into balance. Light and dark. Yang and yin.

It feels like a good reminder that we need both in our lives too.

Time to move and be active.
And time to slow down and let the body settle.

Yin yoga gives us that quieter space to stretch, breathe and allow the nervous system to soften after a busy day or week. This is your time, your space and your opportunity to build the balance.

If you feel like you could do with a little more yin this week, we’ll be practising tomorrow evening.

You’d be very welcome to join us.

Why yoga and self-care?

Yoga is self-care and self-care is yoga.

Self-Care is a practice to get you out of your head and into a more relaxed state. That's exactly what the primary aim of yoga is too!

Whether you've practiced yoga before or not I'm inviting you to try this week.

🕯️ Light a candle
🤫 sit somewhere quiet
🔥 watch the flame

For a moment you will be practicing yoga, by slowing the mind down and stepping into the present moment.

Try it and let me know 👇 if you found a moment of stillness?

Sunday Sep-Care Club

What's your challenge for this coming week?

Are you going to hit snooze 5 times each morning, drag yourself out of bed and hope that the day heads up from there?

Or

Are you going to get up with your alarm, do something positive for yourself first thing and know that you can handle whatever the day throws at you?

Both are challenges. Both are hard.

Choose your challenge, and let me know what that is in the comments below 👇

PS - been feeling quite anxious and low this weekend, and almost didn't post this. While this post is hopefully helping someone the likelihood is those who really need it won't ever see it. That makes me sad, because it's the kind of honest content I could do with myself right now.

All about me ...

Gillian is a qualified Yoga teacher with over 15 years experience on the mat. Working as a Primary School teacher means Gillian possesses a natural talent for both encouraging and challenging her yoga students. Gillian knows first-hand the benefits that comes with regular practice – both physically and mentally. She practices what she preaches, investing time in meditation, yoga nidra, a variety of differing styles of yoga, and passing her knowledge on in a safe and comfortable environment. But have no fear, this is not a class of chanting and joss sticks. Gillian is on a mission to make yoga the norm, accessible for everyone. She believes that the benefits are not just for the bendy among us, but for all those who want to break the rules and rebuild themselves. The overriding element in her classes is that of acceptance. “Mindfulness” is a term bandied about mindlessly these days, but Gillian inspires the idea that taking the time to accept where your mind and your body is each day, rather than striving for the next best thing, is the healthier way to approach yoga, and life itself. All of her classes are interesting, challenging, nurturing, accepting and most of all fun. And what more could you possibly ask for?
