Simple aftercare advice to use after your reflexology treatment.

Stay Hydrated

Following your reflexology treatment it is vital to stay hydrated. This is because the lymphatic system has been stimulated and therefore expels more waste/toxins than usual. Water will help to flush this through your system efficiently and effectively.

Avoid Stimulants

Like caffeine, alcohol, to***co, recreational drugs and enjoy a quiet afternoon if you can.

Enjoy a light diet

Enjoy a light diet for the rest of the day, avoiding spicy foods or anything too greasy that may put extra strain on your digestive system. This is so that the energy we have generated doesn’t get sidetracked into digesting a meal instead of targeting the areas where it is needed. A simple, nourishing soup or a piece of lightly poached fish and rice would be perfect after a treatment.

Rest as much as you can

Ideally book your reflexology treatment on a day when you don’t have to dash anywhere afterwards.

Read a book, listen to soft music, go for a stroll, sitting outside in nature.

Keep a journal or diary

Use a journal or diary to noting down how you felt after treatment and if there is anything that came up for you after the treatment.

Whatever comes up for you, let it out. Don’t try to bottle it or keep it down, just let it pour out. Get it down on paper to release it.

Emotional things you might feel after a treatment

Sometimes you can feel emotional, irritable or a weepy after a treatment, or suddenly burst into fits of uncontrollable giggles, this is known as a healing reaction.

These are all normal as it’s your bodies way of dealing with the effects of the treatments.

Physical things you might notice after your treatment

Hopefully you will feel better after your treatment!

You might notice that you need to use the loo more one way or the other, you might need to go more urgently. You might feel light headed or headachy

You might have mild flu-like symptoms or notice that whatever pain or symptom you came to your appointment with changes.

These usually pass in 24-48 hours, sip water and be gentle to yourself.

Adrenal exhaustion is fatigue that comes from chronic stress, without sufficient recovery. Your body can move between two main states of being – the sympathetic state and the parasympathetic state. The sympathetic state is our fight-or-flight mode. Most of us are on some level of sympathetic state just dealing with day-to-day stress. Reflexology has shown to help the body shift into a parasympathetic state, which conserves energy as it slows the heart rate, increases intestinal and gland activity, and relaxes muscles in the gastrointestinal tract.

A Chinese study on Reflexology and Nervous Exhaustion showed that 75% of the clients with a history of neurasthenia (nervous exhaustion) that were treated daily over seven days greatly improved their symptoms, with 40% being fully recovered.*

The 7,200 nerve endings in each foot connect through the nervous system to the various parts and organs in the body. With some skill and experience, the neural pathways are cleared and relaxed during a treatment. Stroking or holding the feet has a deep effect on the nervous system, and touch itself is considered highly therapeutic. The pressure is in tune with the client’s needs, yet deep enough to cause the right effect. As neural pathways are stimulated and crystallisations of tissue are loosened, brain-to-body communication is improved. Circulation of blood and nutrients are also boosted throughout the whole body. People often remark that they feel lighter, more alive and energised after a Reflexology treatment.

The reflexes for the adrenal glands can be palpated on the feet. When they are tight and tender, the adrenals are depleted. The pituitary reflex is also given special attention as are the thyroid and pancreas reflexes.

During Stress Awareness Month it’s a prefect time to implement some time for self care.

Exploring holistic approaches to help relieve symptoms of stress, like reflexology can be beneficial. This gentle therapy encourages the body to release tension, improve circulation and restore balance to the nervous system, all of which contribute to a greater sense of well-being and reduced stress levels.

Incorporating reflexology into your selfcare routine during stress awareness month can be a proactive step towards managing stress more effectively and nurturing your overall mental and physical health.

Yesterday, access to treatment for migraines was discussed in parliament.

Migraines are a neurological condition and I am very fortunate to have never experienced one.

The symptoms can be debilitating and have a severe impact on people’s quality of life.

Reflexology may help by applying pressure to specific points on the feet or hands corresponding to organs, glands, and other parts of the body, promoting relaxation and easing tension.

It’s thought to improve circulation, reduce stress, and release endorphins, potentially alleviating migraine symptoms.

Reflexology is an excellent complementary therapy, but it should not be seen as a standalone treatment.
