What an amazing post… ❄️
We have been talking a lot this week in the treatment room about ways to embrace this season, instead of always being negative about the darkness, shorter daylight hours and the cold weather, we’ve talked about using it to slow down, warm and nurture ourselves.
Sam (Cambridgeshire Reflexology) has absolutely nailed all the information into a beautiful post for us this season…
Thank you 🙏
Winter time is upon us. Another shift in seasons and our energy as its responds to the changes in temperature. I think that this time of year is the hardest time for our body. We get ill, feel tired, our bones and joints can ache. It is the most Yin time of year, dark, cold, a time for contemplation, restoration. We should naturally feel the need to turn inward, we need rest and stillness. Winter is the season of storage, we need to conserve and rebuild our energy so we are prepared for the coming spring.
Winter time is linked with the kidney meridian. It is the water element, the flow of life. The kidney meridian maintains our yin and yang balance, they are the root of life. The emotional link is with fear. In times gone by winter was about scarcity of food and survival. Today, we get that way by having chronic stress in our lives. This is what weakens the kidney meridian . We need to strengthen and support it during the winter.
Some key ways to support your kidney meridian is to keep warm. Make sure you wear a scarf, wear layers to keep your back warm and keep your feet and ankles covered and warm.
Delicious, soups, broths and stews are the best thing to eat. Along with dark green leafy veg, black beans, kidney beans. Seaweed too for saltiness, the flavour of the meridian. Warm gently cooked food is best. Root vegetables are good. Sweet potatoes, potatoes, carrots, turnips, swede have spent all year storing energy as they grow underground, it’s eating stored energy for us. Limit iced drinks and raw food. Your body is adjusting to the colder weather and by adding iced drinks it’s making it harder. It’s all about balance not excess.
In the western world we tend to go against nature, we spend too much time rushing around, especially with Christmas around the corner, we overwhelm ourselves completely. A worthy question to ask yourself would be, is that what I want to use my energy for?
Listen to your body, rest when tired, don’t push yourself. In the evenings dim the lights bright lights are too stimulating. Stop screen time at least an hour before bed.
In the morning when you wake sit quietly for a few minutes, don’t rush, have a gentle start. Enjoy your first drink in the quiet, journal your thoughts if that’s your thing, meditate or do some gentle stretches.
Another way you can ensure your kidney meridian is supported is by enjoying your regular Chi Reflexology session.
As always I’ll be sharing a few more tips to help you navigate this beautiful season.
