In over 800 births, I've never seen twins be born outside of the hospital...and in most cases, in the OR. Most families are regulated to two choices: a cesarean birth or a highly managed vaginal birth (that often requires birthing on an operating table with bright lights and a room bustling with strangers).
This family knew they wanted something different for their babies. They made an informed decision to give birth in a calm and gentle environment. Both babies were born en caul, in the water. Both babies came into the world with such ease. I could hardly believe what I was seeing...twin birth can really be as simple as this. And this mama? She felt safe and supported and loved on the entire time.
I'm sharing this image not because I think everyone pregnant with twins should give birth at home (I don't think that) but I do think that families deserve options and choices and true informed consent. Too many of my clients find out their twin pregnancy strips them from all options or choices, and I think this needs to change. I've seen several low risk twin births turn into high risk twin births because of the number of interventions the hospital required (again, I do KNOW that some genuine emergencies can happen).
I'll be sharing more in the days ahead because this birth took my breath away. And this mama wants the world to know what's possible.
