❔❓What is Cognitive Analytic Therapy?❓❔

Cognitive analytic therapy, also known as CAT is a relational therapy that helps individuals understand and change recurring patterns of thinking, feeling and ways of relating to others.

Sometimes our patterns of behaviour, or our expectations of other people’s behaviour, can develop into unhealthy or unhelpful repeating patterns.

With a trained therapist, CAT will explore how early life experiences and relationships shape your patterns and how they contribute to current difficulties. CAT will often map out relationship patterns, in what is known as reciprocal relational patterns.

CAT has been shown to be effective for a broad range of difficulties, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance misuse and relationship difficulties.

💛 Mental Health Awareness Week 💛

This year, Mental Health Awareness Week, led by the , is celebrating the theme of “community”. At , we are taking this opportunity to shine a light on how connection is essential for the wellbeing of new parents.

🍼Becoming a parent is often described as one of life’s most joyous experiences—but for many, it also brings profound vulnerability. The transition to parenthood brings immense change—physically, emotionally, and socially. For many, it also brings loneliness, anxiety, and a loss of identity.

🌿Perinatal or post-natal mental health disorders—such as Depression, Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)—affect up to 20% of women and 10% of men worldwide (Howard et al., 2014).

🫂However, research has consistently shown that community support acts as a protective buffer, mitigating the psychological strain of new parenthood.

💛 Mental Health Awareness Week 💛

This year, Mental Health Awareness Week, led by the , is celebrating the theme of “community”. At , we are taking this opportunity to shine a light on how connection is essential for the wellbeing of adoptive families.

🌿While every adoptive journey is unique, many parents face challenges that aren’t often spoken about. The early days of bonding with a child—especially if there’s been early trauma, attachment disruption, or developmental differences—can be emotionally intense.

👥 Dr Morvwen Duncan, our Lead Clinical Psychologist, conducted a 3 year research study, exploring parental stress and secondary trauma in adoptive parents, which found 10% of parents displayed symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). A follow up, qualitative study highlighted the protective nature of a support network, and in particular, a support network of other adoptive families.

✅ At The Lotus Psychology Practice, all therapeutic interventions are informed by scientific research and are in line with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines. Alongside their clinical practice, many of our Psychologists contribute to the research evidence based.

This quantitative study, by our Founder & Director, Dr Morvwen Duncan was published in the journal of Clinical Child Psychology and Psychiatry. This study explores trauma responses in adoptive parents.

⭐ The findings have direct clinical implications for services and organisations supporting adoptive children and families as the first known study to demonstrate the need for greater awareness and training to screen for trauma symptoms and provide early support for adoptive parents.

⭐ It further demonstrates the significance of current, direct trauma in the form of child-to-parent violence, a known risk factor for adoption disruption. Supporting the mental health of adoptive parents considering direct traumatic experiences is vital to supporting adoptive parents.

This research highlights the need for holistic, long-term support for adoptive families💛
