Today is International Stress Awareness
Day 🤯

Stress – it’s one of the most commonly reported
triggers for migraine. Perhaps a well-meaning (but
ill-informed!) friend has suggested the solution to living
with migraine is to just ‘be less stressed’ – if only!

But addressing excessive stress in our lives is a
positive step we can take to help us manage the
challenges that are thrown our way.

Creating a toolkit of coping strategies is an excellent
way to do this 🛠

Dr Sophie White, Clinical Psychologist suggests taking
stock of what causes stress in our lives, and whether
there are any practical steps we can take to reduce that
stress. However, she’s clear that avoiding all stress is
not a realistic goal: “It’s important to recognise that we
might not be able to get rid of everything that is
causing us stress, especially if those things are out of
our control.”

Dr White also suggests thinking of a few different
activities that help you feel better, including:

• things that bring physical comfort such as sitting in
your favourite cosy chair 🛋, exercising 🏋️‍♀️or cuddling
a pet 🐱
• social strategies like reaching out for a chat 💬 or
being around loved ones 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
• creative strategies which might include journaling ✍️
or getting arty 🎨

“In a DIY toolbox, we do not use everything all at the
same time: some days we need one thing, other days
we need another. It is okay to take the time for you to
do what you need.”

What would you include in your stress-busting toolkit?
